As the Swinging Sixties turned into the 1970s, the influence of boutique stores and diffusion lines made ready-to-wear clothing increasingly accessible. New synthetic fabrics meant that fashionable styles could be bought at any price point. So pervasive were these materials that the seventies became known as the “Polyester Decade.” The decade saw a wide range of popular styles: from the early prairie dresses influenced by hippie fashion, to the flashy party wear worn to disco nightclubs, to the rise of athletic wear as the decade looked towards the 1980s, the seventies was a decade that explored fashion, but also looked back.

For women, the Hippie look of the 1960s carried over to the early ’70s. Popular styles included bell bottom pants, frayed jeans, midi skirts, maxi dresses, Tie dye, peasant blouses, and ponchos. Some accessories that will help pull together your early ’70s Hippie outfits are chokers, headbands, scarves, and jewelry made of wood, stones, feathers, and beads.

"Fashion is part of the daily air and it changes all the time, with all the events. You can even see the approaching of a revolution in clothes. You can see and feel everything in clothes." —Diana Vreeland

Women in the early ’70s who didn’t go for the Hippie look often chose more of a dressy or dressy casual wardrobe. This look included tight t-shirts or dresses with a fitted wide lapel blazer, flared pants, sweaters, cardigans, and boots. Pastels were popular colors, especially baby blue, yellow, mauve, and peach.

The 1980s was possibly the boldest decade in modern fashion history, a magical era of over-the-top silhouettes, teased perms and saturated colors. They were the years of puffed shoulders and power suits, flashy skirts and spandex leggings, velour, leg warmers and voluminous parachute pants.

When thinking of 80’s fashion, the words ‘big and bright’ surely sums it up. It was a decade of big hair, shoulder pads, large and dramatic earring types, acid wash jeans and eye-straining fabric colors and patterns. Fashion trends in the 1980s were about materialistic values and flaunting wealth. Having the right clothes meant spending extra money to buy designer labels and sports goods with a brand logo.

Princess Diana: Many 80s fashion statements started with Princess Diana, even though she professed herself entirely disinterested in fashion. Beloved by the world since she first publicly appeared with Prince Charles early in 1981, people noted and emulated her every move. Diana was the force behind iconic 80’s clothing as diverse as the padded shoulder and feminine patterned silk blouses, high waisted jeans, statement shoulder pads, the winged ‘Diana’ hairstyle, and pearl earrings. She also sparked bizarre 80’s trends such as wearing several watches at once.

"Fashion you can buy, but style you possess. The key to style is learning who you are, which takes years. There's no how-to road map to style.

In 1990, recession-weary shoppers chose to spend money on clothes that would stay in style as long as possible. That meant that the wild shapes and colors of recent years needed to be toned down.

The jacket remained the key to daytime dress. A trend setter in the jacket trend was Chanel, who introduced loose versions of the famous Chanel jacket slit vertically at the hem. Some were bright colors like hot pink, tangerine and white. Other leaders were Giorgio Armani, and Calvin Klein.

The biggest difference in 1990 fashion was an explosion of color, with alarming arrays of bright yellow, orange, red, purple and green. Neon bright colors could be obvious as the primary color of a pair of pants — or they could be subtle as the color of a pair of shoestrings.

Brocade, embroidered satins and laces were important, but the most popular style of eveningwear was the slender black dress, worn quite short with black stockings and high-heeled shoes.

In the winter of 1990 the short, swingy coat was worn in full force. Women loved how racy the coat looked over short skirts. Casual styles, such as anoraks and parkas were prominently seen in cold-weather climates.

A revival of the interest in made-to-order clothing occurred in 1990 when women realized that it wasn’t more expensive than ready-to-wear clothing. This surprised many fashion analysts and drew other designers to New York City, following the success of Arnold Scaasi.

Layered tank tops in different colors were popular and should be matched with cargo pants. Popular accessories were: bandanas, sunnies and layered necklaces.
Another major accessory, or statement, was the handbag and the designer logo. The early and mid of the 2000s saw an explosion of designer logos as they were a status symbol (LV and Gucci, but also Chanel). They were on bags, scarves, belts, caps and on the clothes too.
Another important accessory was the belt, it was to be in focus and placed by the hips, this went for any outfit regardless if you wore a crop top or a dress over the jeans. The latter outfit was btw immensely popular and related to the emerge of asymmetrical fashion with skirts and tops going flowy.
