Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican amry's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the French-Mexican War. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is considered a relatively minor holiday but for the United States it has evolved into a huge commemoration of the culture of Mexicans.
The battle part of the holiday went like this, Napoleon III commanded his French troops to drive out Juarez and his government. The small Mexican town called Puebla de Los Angeles was heavily outnumbered in troops at 6,000 French to the Mexican 2,000 troops. Brought up in the article, 10 ways Cinco de Mayo is celebrated differently in the US and Mexico, “The battle didn't last long, from sunup to sundown. In the battle, the French lost about 500 soldiers, while the Mexican troops lost less than 100 men. The winning of Battle of Puebla represented a great victory for the Mexican government and has been solidified in Mexico's history.” (Moné, 2018). After this battle, people commonly mistake this for Mexico gaining their independence but they actually gained this on September 16th, 1810.

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the US because of the vast population of Mexican Americans throughout the country. We are celebrating the culture and history of Mexicans as we are involved with many of those citizens in our every day lives.
For 2018, the celebration of this holiday is more significant than other years. Due to Donald Trump being in office, a lot of the issues with illegal immigrants has sparked up fear and tension between the cultural Mexican Americans and our president. In the article, Everything you need to know about the day celebrating Mexican culture, “...and some have said they are fearful of celebrating Cinco de Mayo this year because Mr Trump has stepped up immigration enforcement since taking office.” (Mindock, 2018). Fearfulness should never be a feeling that someone has acquired because of their leader of the nation.

Very similar to the United States, they celebrate for the same reasons being that they celebrate the culture of the citizens in their nation. Stated in the article, Cinco de Mayo Around the World, “Cinco de Mayo isn’t celebrated in Canada as vibrantly as it is in the United States, however festivities still endure. The Abbotsford Skydive Center in Vancouver, for example, hosts an annual Cinco de Mayo skydiving event, complete with food (hopefully consumed after skydiving), an air show and live music.” (telc, 2014). this quote from the article was split with how they celebrate and why they do it because they want the cultures to collide and respect each others history.

Traditions carried throughout the years would include celebrations by doing military parades, recreations of the Battle of Puebla and other festive events. For many Mexicans, however, May 5th is a day like any other: It is not a federal holiday, so offices, banks and stores remain open. The main big celebrations are hot in the state of Puebla, where the actual battle occured. Other cities in Mexico still celebrate. The celebration in Mexico is focused on the military aspect and the battles they won.
Certain signature dishes are celebrated on this date, one being mole poblano, said in the article, How People Actually Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Mexico, "to a thick, complex sauce thats made with over a dozen ingredients, including chili peppers and chocolate. Typically served over chicken. During these celebrations, the city hosts the Festival International del Mole, a two-day festival where celebrity chefs discuss, prepare, and celebrate the dish." (Avakian, 2015).

Throughout the United States, the nation as a whole always recognizes the special day. We are celebrating and paying respects to the culture of our close brothers and sisters throughout the country. A quickly summarizes conclusion on what the US focuses on while celebrating the holiday in the article, 10 ways Cinco de Mayo is celebrated differently in the US and Mexico, “In America, celebrations are focused on eating and drinking.” (Moné, 2018). This isn't wrong. Cinco de Mayo is well known for the celebrating of drinking and feasting.

Since Canada doesn't really have any reason to celebrate the holiday as not many of their population is of the Mexican descent. They celebrate for the same reasons the US does and do so by partaking in drinking and eating but in a much smaller fashion. Canada’s celebration of the holiday will not be taking place all over their nation. Instead, it will be taking place in popular cities like, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary. Certain bars, hotels, or general areas will be having scheduled parties focused on the holiday as they will have special margarita competitions, music and dancing how all the countries mainly celebrate.

As you can see, this celebration and holiday is bigger than you think and affects more than just Mexico. Countries across the globe put some type of effort forward to show their appreciation to the Mexican culture. This is very apparent with the involvement of the United States and Canada with how and why they celebrate. In the end, countries around the world celebrate historical events to show appreciation to past generations and the traditions that have been carried for years. Cinco de Mayo is a tradition that will continue to bring multiple nationalities close together.
