When reading this book, it reminded me of The Walking Dead television show because of the zombie/end of the world thing. I like that this book was from a kid’s point of view and how it’s like in their eyes- what are their daily routines during an apocalypse. I am the type of person that doesn’t like being alone, so when Jack asked Dirk to join them, I felt that comfort.

Before reading, I imagined that this book would be sort of like the television show, Codename: Kids Next Door. It was about kids that fight crime and monsters and such. Now I know that this book was kind of about that minus the crime. The cover of the book has kids with weapons, so I figured that it would be some type of action fighting story.

I think that the introduction of a story is important. It sets the tone for the rest of the book. In this book, Jack is fighting off a monster and it’s very exciting. That made me interested to see what happens next. I think the author values friendship because of the thought that was put into the little moments. He spends time focusing on the conversations they have together and the emotions he feels.

I didn’t have any issues reading the book. I listened to this book on an audiobook. The narrator was very energetic and made the story come alive. I think that if it was a boring, monotoned narrator, I wouldn’t enjoy the book.

When listening to the book, I didn’t picture the characters the way they are drawn. They weren’t specifically described physically, like they have brown hair and blue eyes for example. Now that I know what they look like it fits together. Like I said earlier, the narrator made the book come alive, so it was easy for me to picture the pages.

This book is a great read for elementary aged students who want to escape and put themselves in an action state of mind. Jack Sullivan is a kid that you can relate to. He is trying to beat this apocalypse with his best friend, new friend, and love. Their adventures and inventions make you feel like you’re right there with them.
