In the song Believer by Imagine Dragons, Dan Reynolds and Dolph Lundgren are fighting in a boxing ring. During there fight a child appears every so often drawing in a chair. He didn't write this song for a specific occasion, but instead for him overcoming his anxiety and depression. The audience is himself since he wrote this song to fight his mental illnesses. Dan Reynolds states that "'The meaning of the song is really reflecting on specific things in my life that were painful, whether it was anxiety and dealing with crowds, feeling overwhelmed by that or the success of the band, disease, going through depression—anything that was a source of pain in my life. And just rising above that, finding a place of perspective where I could be appreciative of the pain in my life and make it my greatest strength" (Reynolds 1). In the song Believer imagine dragons the singer Dan Reynolds is the voice that tells the story. The tone of the piece is to inspire passion, ambition, hope, and the ability to overcome pain.

In the song beleiver, they accuratley set an image and desribe what Dan reynolds is going through. In lines Twenty nine to thirty six you can see how he paints a picture of his emotions. he states "I was choking in the crowd, (His anxiety and depression allready was hurting him)
Building my rain up in the cloud, (he cant handle his emotions so he bottles them in)
Falling like ashes to the ground, (He cant do anything and his emotions chrush him to the ground.)
Hoping my feelings, they would drown, (hopping his feelings would die out)
But they never did, ever lived, ebbing and flowing (but they diddnt and instead they grew)
Inhibited, limited (how he feels limitied and inhibited when he tryes to bottle up his emotions)
'Til it broke up and it rained down
it rained down like
pain. (but instead they exploded and it hurt and created so much damage and pain.)
this accurately shows pathos because its Painting a piture and giving us an example is saying that he struggeles with his emotions and has to fight them everyday. it also shows that he has a very unhealthy way of constantly stuff his emotions in which makes him more anxious and angry. In the lyrics he shows his emotion by not only what hes saying but how hes saying them. in those exact lyrics, he starts al a mp and ends up at a ff. His lyrics also speed up to show how his emotions building and growing.

Dan Reynolds effectively shows ethos in the song Believer in lines nine through sixteen, because it shows him as a kid describing what he lived through and what it made him onto today.
"I was broken from a young age (something either happened when he was a kid or he was born with his mental illnesses.)
Taking my sulking to the masses (every-ware he went he wasn't ever really happy)
Write down my poems for the few (as a kid he didn't have a lot of good friends
That looked at me, took to me, shook to me, feeling me (but the friends or people who listened could relate and respond to him)
Singing from heartache from the pain (these lines are logos because he states-
Taking my message from the veins (what really happened, although , one can-
Speaking my lesson from the brain (infer that when he wrote music that was true-
Seeing the beauty through the pain ( to how he felt)
there are some words in here that could relate to logos but in all it generally represents ethos.
it can be conveyed as ethos because it shows you who he was as a kid. since he had mental illness from a young age that didn't stop him from what he wanted to do, so it shows that he can persevere through tough times, even if it needs encouragement by friends. it also shows that he tries to see the silver lining through tough situations when he states he can "see the beauty through the pain."

EDIT THIS: Believer is effective in using pathos and ethos to describe Dan Reynolds and how he believes he can overcome his mental illness though pain. In their music video, they effectively show ethos when Reynolds character fighting over and over again each time rising up. this shows that he doesn't give up, is determined to win, and believes that he can overcome his anxiety. Imagine Dragons also use pathos in their music, and their video. they use pathos show and describe what Dan Reynolds is going through. in the music video he does this by showing true emotion on his face, and by the red color technique they use for whenever Reynolds shows that true emotion. they also show pathos with thier use of movements with the the kid in the red chair (young Dan) scribbles sparaticly on the paper, to Reynolds or Dolph swiftly striking one another to only have the other fall into space. they also use flashes of imagery in sync with the beat creating a fast paced story, and stimulates passion within the listener. in the lyrics he shows his emotion by not only what hes saying but how hes saying them, and creates emotion of ambition. in total Imagine dragons believer created a song and music video that effectively portray Dan Reynolds mental state.
