The movie “Brotherly Love” is an independent film that was released in 2015 starring Keke Palmer, Cory Hardrict, and Romeo Miller. The film was directed by Jamal Hill a film writer and director who happens to be a Philly native, he is also known for participating in many film productions. This film was shot in different areas of West Philadelphia. Brotherly Love was based on the story of a struggling drug dealer family that lives in West Philadelphia.

In the movie, Keke Palmer played the character Jackie, who was a teen that attended Overbrook High School where she was a cheerleader and a sibling to two well known young men, one was her twin brother Sergio who was a high school basketball star, and the other was her older brother Eric, also known as June who was a known drug dealer in the area. Her brother Sergio played by Eric D. Hill Jr. was the star basketball player for their basketball team the Overbrook Panthers. June played by Cory Hardrict was the older brother of Jackie and Sergio. He was a drug dealer who had to step up and care for his family after the passing of his father.

In the film the theme of the hood was very prominent. The movie had a lot of aspects you’d see in the hood with the trap music, tinted windows on car, drive by shootings, and pregnant teenagers.

Music In the Film

The music used in the film was very current and flowed well with the film. They used music selections by Meek Mill, Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton, and it included an original song by Keke Palmer. The song “No Love” by Keke Palmer was about her relationship with a classmate Chris Collins played by Quincy Brown, the song has a R&B melody with some hints of percussion instruments. A powerful lyric she used “ It was perfect yesterday, Out of the blue you walked away, The story I keep living over again, I pray having love would be all we need, But it's no true, no, Never true, no” which explained the predicament he put her in by leaving her in the film randomly. The music in the film was very mellow it didn’t contain too much rap music until the party scenes.

Acting In the Film

For an independent film, the acting in this movie was very impressive. Jamal Hill picked really good underrated actors who delivered the roles given. Quincy did a phenomenal job playing the role of a pretty boy with hood mentality. He was a very sneaky character from the start of the movie and towards the end it really shows that he was being fake from the start of the movie towards Jackie. June played a very strong male figure to the entire family with there being a missing father figure in the movie. Jackie played her role of a sassy teen who wanted to experience love with people she had no business being in love with.
