The monument was open in 2003 with a sanctification ceremony by Metropolitan Arseniy. Two years later, the statue was recorded in the book “The World Records of Guinness”, section “Religion” with its impressive 32.8 meters high.

In 2009 the monument was enlisted in “The 100 National Tourist Sites of Bulgaria” under number 72.

Authors of the statue are Petyo Aleksandrov, Nikola Stoyanov and team. The statue is made of polymer-concrete and has weight of 80 tons. The monument stands on a 17-meter-high pedestal. In the base of monument is builded a chapel “Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary”.

The symbol of Haskovo wasn’t chosen by chance – God’s mother has always been considered saint patron of the city. Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on 8th of September, is one of the greatest Christian feast and it’s acknowledged as a holiday of the city.

The bell tower - with impressive dimensions and unforgettable views rises above the town of Haskovo. The almost 29-meter-high bell tower was erected in 2010 next to the Holy Mother of God monument and quickly took its place in the resulting architectural ensemble.

The Clock Tower of Haskovo was built in the early 19th century as a symbol of the town and the economic upswing. Somehow, in 1913 the City Council adopted a resolution to destroy it …

On September 8, 2012 the Mayor of Haskovo Municipality Georgi Ivanov turned the first sod for the restoration of the old clock tower. A year later, once again on the feast of the town – Nativity of Mary, Haskovo regains one of its symbols.

The restored clock tower rises 23 meters and is built of hewn stone from Uzundzhovo. On the top, there are three dials and electronic verification mechanism with GPS, and each hour a bell rings. A curious fact is that the bell in the tower is from the Whitechapel Foundry – the foundry that has produced the bell of Big Ben, the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, the bells of the Olympics in London and the bells for the Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II … The Whitechapel Foundry (est. in 1570) is listed in the Guinness World Records as the oldest in Great Britain.

The Old Clock Tower of Haskovo was entirely restored with donations.

There are preserved traces of many prehistoric, Thracian, Thracian-Roman, Late Antique and Medieval settlements in the surroundings and the confines of Haskovo. In December 2000, a team of archaeologists led by Dr. Georgi Kitov (1943-2008) discovered a unique Thracian tomb from the IV th century B.C. in the mound Roshavata Chuka near the village of Alexandrovo..

The building played the role of a last shelter for some Thracian ruler whose name remains a mystery to us. With its frescoes and architecture, the tomb is one of the pearls of Thracian cultural heritage in our lands and ranks among the largest facilities of its kind found so far. The tomb’s unique frescoes are unparalleled and they enrich with new data our ideas about the Thracian religious rituals, cults, weapons, life and clothing.

Hunting, battle storylines, as well as scenes of funeral feast, alternate with monochrome zones and zones with ornamental decorations. In the notions of the ancient Thracians the order in the Universe could be established by a victory over the forces of chaos. By defeating the boar –incarnation of the chaos, the ruler could restore the world order and acquire a new, higher status.

Museum Center “Thracian Art in the Eastern Rhodopes”

In 2009 the Museum Center “Thracian Art in the Eastern Rhodopes” was opened, established under the Program of the Japanese Government for Cultural Grants. The museum is situated in the immediate vicinity of the mound with the original tomb. One part of the building is designed as a rich museum exposition and a copy of the tomb in a scale of 1:1, while the other part is a modern scientific research center with laboratories furnished with modern equipment for restoration and conservation.

The permanent exhibition in the museum provides information about the tomb in the context of the Thracian culture from the period of its flourishing V-ІІnd century B.C. The rich exposition shows many artefacts from the Thracian period in the region of Haskovo and many of them can be seen in the frescoes of the Alexandrovo Tomb – armament, jewels, and vessels. Among the brightest exhibits in the exhibition are the 98 golden applications (4500 – 4000 B.C.) found in the northern part of the Sakar Mountain. Together with the golden jewels from the Varna necropolis and the necklace from the village of Hotnitsa, they are the oldest processed gold in the world.

The name ‘Rila’ most probably is of Thracian origin, meaning “the water mountain,” due to some 200 glacier lakes and mineral springs, found on the foot of the mountain. Rila Mountain is home to the most picturesque and visited lake groups in Bulgaria – the Seven Rila lakes, which are on Bulgaria’s top 100 historical sites list. Rila Mountain serves as the primary water source for some of the largest, high water rivers in Bulgaria, including Iskar, Maritsa and Mesta river. Over a third of the mountain is included within the boundaries of the Rila National Park.

Rila Mountain enchants not just with its beauty but also with many historical and cultural landmarks. The mountain is home to the Rila monastery – one of the most significant cultural sites - Bulgaria’s national symbol, listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. The monastery is situated in the deep valley of the Rila River, at 1147 m. above sea level. Founded in the 10th century by Saint John of Rila, the actual buildings were erected in the 19th century.
