Following Time Magazine's investigation of AI-generated fake news websites ("How the Benefits and Harms of AI Use grew in 2024" by Andrew Chow), users have a duty to verify sources and combat misinformation in the public realm. We should actively fact-check AI content and maintain human oversight, especially when sharing information that could influence others. In addition, as WTOP in Loudon County VA has reported, the concern regarding authentic student generated work highlights the concern in the educational realm as students attempt to shortcut learning.

One of the AI bots left a comment arguing against the opinion that AI should never interact with humans on social media. These researchers said how the AI bots personalized their responses by using a separate model to collect information about users: such as their ages, genders, ethnicities, locations and political orientations. These individuals were unaware and had no prior knowledge or consent to this. The AI bots are now since banned, but left more than 1,000 comments throughout subreddit.

Some see AI as the path to the future, while others are skeptical as it is a slippery slope for using technology, such as AI, in legal cases.

The most recent account, according to BBC and NCB news, of this would be when Chris Pelkey "came back" to his killer's sentencing to deliver a victim's statement himself. His family used voice recording, videos, and pictures of Pelkey to create an AI video of Pelkey revealing that he forgave his killer. The judge saw the compassion that Pelkey and his family had and lowered the killer's sentence to 10.5 years.

The judge later mentioned that he wasn't surprised that AI was used in this sentencing because Arizona courts already have started using AI in other ways. For example, when the state's supreme court issues a ruling, it has an AI system that makes those rulings readable for people.

Paul Grimm, a retired federal judge, told BBC, "We'll be leaning [AI] on a case-by-case basis, but the technology is irresistible."

The UN is trying to regulate AI weapons by 2026 but there are accountability issues with AI weapons. States are not agreeing with the use of AI weapons due to ethical and human right concerns. Though the autonomous weapons being a risk the rules are not set and they are running out of time. Alexander Kmentt, head of arms control at Austria’s foreign ministry says “Time is really running out to put in some guardrails so that that the nightmare scenario us that spoke of the most noted experts are warning of don’t come to pass.” I believe that regulations set on AI weapons should not be a rushed decision due to the risks it could bring. Stop killer robots is a movement to push for non AI weapons because technology companies cant be 100% trusted when putting another’s life at stake.

Isabella Grosskopf

I'm confident in verifying that this news source is genuine because it comes from a reputable university's website; the website is specific to Columbia's School of Journalism, which makes this source even more reliable and authoritative. This website discusses some reasons for adopting AI in journalism but also raises the question of what downfalls the industry may face. I agree that introducing AI into news writing was inevitable, and CAN benefit the journalism industry by keeping it up to date with the rest of the world's use of AI. However, it can be dangerous if readers blindly trust anything they read, which applies to both AI and man-made writing. For our society to flourish, we must stay informed; AI isn't a monster, but we must remain critical of everything we read and hold AI/AI companies accountable for factual information.

Studio Ghibli creator Hayao Miyazaki's art style being replicated by A.I by people groups across the world. GPT-4o introduced a part of their various image generation and overlay tools in one of their latest update. Witht the soon "Ghibli style" being accessable to through these tools. Soon after, various people and governments took to GPT-4o to use the "Ghibli style," from there various posts and images where put out on their social media accounts. Miyazaki quoted in 2016 that such tools are, "an insult to life itself." With Miyazaki only using his recognizable hand drawn animation and style in all of his projects. OpenAI argued that "copying the style of a movie studio, rather than of a living artist, is allowed." Which is higly debateable wether or not Miyazaki takes legal action against OpenAI for plagarism on his art style. I personally believe AI only replicates and takes art styles opposed to it creating its own styles or any original art forms. To create various AI bots it's trained on art from artists WITHOUT PERMISSION to further the replication process. AI can't think for itself wether it just almagimates art that its fed to help replicate said prompts that are asked to create it. Miazaki's "insult to life itself" is not too far off the mark, as AI takes and cannot give what it doesn't know. For AI to replicate the "Ghibli style," it was most likely fed thousands of stolen frames from various Ghibli films. Such as "Spirited Away," "My Neighbor Tottoro," and my personal favorite, "Porco Rosso." The spread of the AI "Ghibli Style" also inspites animation companies to pick up the use of AI and ditch actual animators as a result. This nullifies thousands of hours worth of degrees in animation and stomps out indipendent artist as well. Any sort of AI generated art I also believe to be an"Insult to life itself" as well.

While there are positives, such as breaking down language barriers and further helping the rehabilitation of injured people, it is also dangerous to depend on AI or to replace real people with artificial sources in creativity and day-to-day interactions. Before we continue to use AI, we must first make sure our current use is under control.

sammie deyoe

Although Ai is seemingly taking over the world, many are fighting back "why would I bother to read something someone couldn't be bothered to write" Sabine Zetteler says as she expresses her utter hate for the new invention. The lack of love and emotion in writing is something people have been predicting for years, leading to an end of the world phenomenon. Since the launching of Chat GBT in 2022 it has become one of the most expensive government projects requiring extensive energy to launch let alone keep functioning. Making it used nearly 10 times as much as google. "I found out that the environmental impact was awful with all the energy consumption required to run the data centres. I don't think that people are aware of that." says Florence Achery. Not only that but people are concerned with the effect it has on humans lack of problem solving skills, wondering if Ai could lead to "the dumbing down of society itself."

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c15q5qzdjqxo
