Essentially, we will focus on COHERENCE of argument across paragraphs. This requires:

• A clear Introduction with a strong thesis - one that lays out the road map for the essay.

• 3 Body Paragraphs (Given Factor - Alternative Factor 1 - Alternative Factor 2), where each paragraph builds upon the previous one, towards a coherent argument. For this tutorial, write full topic sentences and evidence in point form.

(We will omit the Conclusion for now)

Form FOUR groups

15 mins: Share your tutorial preparation within your groups and decide on the best approaches for this essay question.

5 mins: Create a Google Document and share your selected Essay approach in the column, "Group Submissions". Write your Group members' names as the Title. Change the access rights to "Anyone with the link can edit".

15 mins: Critique another group's essay approach (Group 1 <- -> Group 3; Group 2 <- -> Group 4). Use these guiding questions:

1. What is one strength of the Introduction? Why?

2. What is one area of improvement for the Introduction? Why?

3. Do the topic sentences contain an argument that answers the question directly and obviously? Why or why Not?

4. Does the evidence provided for each paragraph have specific details and support the argument it seeks to make? Why or why not?

5. Do the paragraphs build upon one another towards a coherent argument by the end of the final paragraph? Why or why not?

15 mins: Each group shares their responses to Question 5. All groups will read the feedback for their group pertaining to Questions 1 to 4 after the tutorial. Your tutors will add their comments to these questions after the tutorial too.
