What aspects of the Dystopian society are found in your novel? What statement is the author trying to make by utilizing that particular aspect? What is the change that your character/s are attempting to bring about? Do you think they will be successful and if so, will the change bring what they hope?
The smoke is all about being your self and that is something you could never experience in the city. Tally has been told she is different than anyone who traveled there. No one had traveled there alone and with only notes as directions. everyone else had been lead there by David. Tally also understood that everything there was dangerous and meant something. David said that Tally was different than anyone else but she didn't realize that yet. The whole time being there tally is getting used to the feeling of working and she is really liking it. After meeting Davids parents and learning the real truth about the operation, Tally is really considering staying at the Smoke. Over the few days her way of thinking had totally changed. Before she left the city and towards the beginning it was all about becoming pretty and spending her life with Peris. After seeing everything, meeting new people, and learning the truth staying in the Smoke is now a real option for her. The author is trying to get across that is everyone was the same then it really wouldnt be better for us, they would just brain wash everyone.
"Almost everyone in the world has these lesions." P.251

Is he/she experiencing success or roadblocks, and how is the success or roadblocks being handled?
Tally was doing good until shay left. That night Tally felt really lonely up until she was supposed to get her operation. She had been looking forward to that since she was a little. Then the the Specials came in and told her she would have to break her promise she was not okay. When she came to the conclusion she had made a promise to Peris so breaking Shays promise wasnt that bad. She then went to the specials and told them everything they knew. She was sent out of the city to find the smoke. Now she has to decide if she should expose the smoke or not.
"its called the Smoke. its not a city, and nobody's in charge. In what ways do the common ideas effect your characters choices or actions?
making promises, Tally made a promise to both Shay and Peris. To her making a promise is set in stone. Also moving on, like she has always wanted to be pretty but right now she can rat on the Smoke and become pretty or stay ugly forever and keep it a secret. on her way there they have to be very careful to make sure she wasnt followed because they dont want people to find it. Tally had to decide to keep her promise to Shay or to Peris.
"we've got a wasys to go. we,re just making sure you weren't followed." P. 183

Like when her best friend was turned pretty she stayed with him until she couldn't. When she was missing him so much she snuck into pretty town just to make sure they were still friends. On her way back she met a new friend and now they go on adventures like going beyond city limits to see the rusty ruins that Tally hadn't seen yet. "The two friends slid between the ruined buildings, riding high and silent as if not to disturb the ghosts of the dead city."p.59 "Tally followed at top speed, rocketing up the spindly track. She could see the ruins in the distance"p.62 Tally is a very fun character to read about, you never really know what she will do next so it keeps you on your toes.

Uglies have worn down old looking clothes that you wouldn't normally wear. Pretties have nice outfits and they also have many options for all the parties. Uglies are more controlled from what i know so far. Once you are turned pretty you live an amazing life and get to stay out and party, pretty much do what you want and have fun. Uglies don't get that privilege, they don't get to have fun they have restrictions on almost everything. They also have to be careful not to mess things up because of they do they wont be turned pretty and will have to be stuck being Ugly. "But what is they get mad enough they don't make me pretty?" p.53

What theme topics are you seeing in your novel? Explain a bit how your protagonist is reacting to these topics.
There is some type of segregation due to looks. Its so strong to the point where they don't want Uglies with Pretties and if they are found together then they are punished. Not only is id segregated but Uglies have more rules. They have to be in bed at a certain time, cant cross the bridge, ect. Pretties can stay out late, party, cross the bridge to ugly town. if a pretty sees an ugly they made a huge deal and don't like the sight of one. "Peris made me promise to take it easy.' 'Tally, do you think maybe he just said that so you wouldn't come around again?"p.53 Uglies also have restrictions on where they can go outside of city limits. "A voice came into Tally's head:"Warning, restricted area."

In the Dystopian Elements handout, there are six examples of conflicts the protagonist/main character might got through. These are not the only conflicts the character might encounter, but just a start. Identify at least one internal conflict your main character is experiencing.
Example:
At the beginning of 1984, Winston, the protagonist, is feeling trapped. There is a great deal of describing the Big Brother posters and how the eyes seemed to follow people. In the apartment, Winston also is very deliberate about having his back to the telescreen or having his facial expression set before turning so the telescreen could "see" him and what he was doing. The layout of his apartment was described, but not with furniture, but as to what areas of the apartment could not be observed by the telescreen.
I also see Winston taking a stand against the establishment. Ignorance is valued and thinking as an individual is considered a crime. Winston buys a journal - illegally and goes to great lengths to find an old pen with which to write in the journal. Just writing/keeping a journal or diary is a punishable act, yet he goes to great lengths to begin to do so and in an area of the apartment that the telescreen cannot "see". This journal, I believe, is going to be an important aspect of Winston's journey.

Describe the setting of your Dystopian novel. Is it similar to anywhere you have visited, viewed, read about, heard about?

Example:
I am at the very beginning of 1984. The setting comes across as very urban and somewhat cold and desolate. I do not get the idea that it is winter. Rather, the descriptions lead me to think of an area that is bleak and lacking of trees, flowers, nature. The desolate description could also be more of the character's feelings toward the world he lives in.
pg. 5 "Outside, even through the window pane, the world looked cold."
pg. 6 "Down the street, little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no color in anything except the posters that were plastered everywhere."
As I am just at the beginning of the novel, I am not sure if the setting described is true for the entire world or just that city and/or group.
