But did you know that Halloween most likely originated from a Celtic festival native to Ireland and Scotland? The festival was called Samhain, pronounced in Irish like "Sow-ihn". The origin of Halloween is unknown, but one of the earliest mentions is in 9th century Irish literature. It was celebrated from 31st October to 1st November.

The tradition of trick-or-treating on Halloween is when children dress up in scary costumes and go from house-to-house in search of lollies. They tend to sing a song or tell a joke as 'currency' for the treat. The 'trick' part implies that the children might play a prank on the house owner if they don't indulge the children with a treat!

The tradition could've come from the Scottish Samhain tradition of 'guising' - disguising yourself in costumes. This was essentially the same as modern trick-or-treating, but the idea was to ward off bad spirits with your costumes. In fact, people believed that the spirits didn't like jack-o-lanterns, hence many carrying them while guising! The fun custom travelled across the pond to America, where it was first recorded in 1911. Again, the tradition was probably a blend of this and the Christian custom of 'souling' - going parish to parish begging for cakes. The parishes would be reimbursed with prayers for their souls.
