Sethe is an ex-slave who is raising the last of her children. She hasn't seen her 2 boys since they ran away from slavery and killed her daughter.

7. Sethe enters every situation confidently, she isn't really scared of much anymore because of the fact that she's been through slavery. She says, on page 18, "no more running- from nothing." She has this mindset because of all of the things she' been through in her life. She realizes that running will solve nothing in the end.

  • This Passage is a symbol to Sethe's dignity. The milk is a direct correlation to her pride. When she talks about the men taking her milk it can immediately relate to how they took her pride. As a slave, her pride was immediately diminished, and as her journey continues she feels that she should have continued her motherhood.
