Hitchhiking

Hitchhiking in Poland has a long history and is still popular. It was legalised and formalised in 1957 so hitchhikers could buy booklets including coupons from travel agencies. These coupons were given to drivers who took hitchhikers. By the end of each season drivers who collected the highest number of coupons could exchange them for prizes, and others took part in a lottery. This so-called "Akcja Autostop" was popular till the end of the 1970s, but the sale of the booklet was discontinued in 1995.
Tips:

Take care who you get a ride with. Some criminals prey on hitchhikers. If in doubt, turn down the ride. If you're in doubt, ask the driver where they're going and tell them you're heading elsewhere

Keep your bag or backpack in easy reach, so you can grab it if you need to bail out. Be prepared to lose it if it is locked in the trunk.

Wear white or a very light color. It implies cleanliness and is far easier to see, plus the cops react favorably.

Use signs. A piece of yellow lightweight plastic sign material is ideal, along with strips of black electrical tape to make the letters.

Finally, ask yourself...would I pick me up? Think like a driver who might enjoy giving you a ride.

Always stay happy - even if people react nastily.

METRO- it's only in capital of Poland - Warsaw and has just 2 lines.

In the 1950s, as the Cold War raged on, Soviet strategic plans required that a secure transport link across the river Vistula be built. One of the ways to achieve this was to create a deep metro system in Warsaw (up to 46 m (150 ft) beneath the ground), which would be interlinked with the rail network and could serve as an underground conduit for transporting troops. By 1953 only 771 m (843 yd) of tunnels had been built; after the death of Joseph Stalin and the start of a period of detente, all work was halted under the pretext of technical difficulties. The Metro was opened on 7 April 1995 with a total of 11 stations. The initial line, Line M1, has 21 stations over a route distance of 22.7 km (14.1 mi).By 1953 only 771 m (843 yd) of tunnels had been built; after the death of Joseph Stalin and the start of a period of detente, all work was halted under the pretext of technical difficulties. Ticket costs 3,40 zl (it's 21,25 CZK). It's fast transport but be careful, there are many pickpockets around.

Polish Spice Cake, also sometimes known as Polish Gingerbread is a traditional Polish gingerbread that has been produced since the Middle Ages in the city of Toruń. Pierniki Toruńskie, as they are known in Polish, are an icon of Poland's national cuisine. They have traditionally been presented as a gift by the city of Toruń to Polish leaders, artists and others who have distinguished themselves in Polish society, and to Polish kings. Since at least the Middle Ages, pierniki have been connected with Toruń in Polish proverbs and legends. One legend claims that gingerbread was a gift from the Queen of the Bees to the apprentice Bogumił. A 17th-century epigram by poet Fryderyk Hoffman speaks of the four best things in Poland: "The vodka of Gdańsk, Toruń gingerbread, the ladies of Cracow, and the Warsaw shoes".

Lightweights in summer months, with a sweater for walking and the cooler evenings. Medium- to heavyweights are advised in winter. Waterproofing is neccesary throughout the year.

From November it turns colder and damper, and there can be substantial snow. January and February are particularly cold, so our advice would be to pack warm layers, a coat, gloves, a warn hat and scarf. A furry lining or trim will keep you even cosier.

Light wool is a good choice to wear against your skin as it naturally helps to regulate your body temperature. It keeps you warm in the cold, wicks away moisture when it's hot, and doesn't retain odours - even after prolonged wear.

Again for winter - to keep your feet warm pack boots with a water resistant sole. It's important that you get soft rubber soles because even medium soles get really hard in the freezing cold. Make sure too that they have large spaces between the tracks, or the snow will get stuck in them and make them very slippery.

In May, June, July, August, September and October it will be warmer, although there can still be heavy rains (particularly between June and August) so pack a raincoat and travel umbrella

Dressing in layers will help you with the temperature changes during the day, whatever time of year you visit.
