We learn that the "paradise" that our characters live in is not as perfect as it seems. This is a classic example of a utopia turning into a dystopia. All the characters in this novel are power hungry, evil people whose soul perpose is to help themselves. In the novel, El Patron seems to be this nice, friendly person but it turns out he makes dozens upon dozens of clones for new, fresh bodyparts. This ties into the theme of characters being power hungry because he is constantly trying to improve himself. Then you have people like Matt, who have been decieved into thinking that they are in a perfect place where everyone is nice, or so he thinks. Another thing I noticed was that they are called the Alacrans. This means that they are scorpions, which take advantage of others. Matt begins to see that clones are not respected because their existince is only meant for harvesting. But back to the concept of characters, you have people like Tom. Tom is really power hungry, and he only wants to make people miserable. This is because of the setting. Rosa views clones as animals and vermin. She believes that he has no rights. So the conflict is in between Rosa and Matt. 
"'Where is Tom?' El Patron turned to Matt. 'I put him at the baby table', Matt said.
'You Pig!' Maria said."(Farmer 104). This quote is an example of conflict found in the book. The characters are fighting amongst themselves which is the definition of conflict.

On page 90, "Matt discovered he could re-create the songs Celia sang to him, using only one finger. Felicia used all ten, but he hadn't figured out how to do that yet."(Farmer 90). This quote compares Matteo and Felicia. They are both interesting with playing the piano. However, Matt is just starting to learn.
