Comparing Pinterest and Pocket

Pocket and Pinterest are both platforms that are used to manage information and content. They do both have quite a few similarities and also a few different things about them. Neither of them for me was difficult to use and I found them both very interesting when it came to saving content. Pinterest involved the collection of different images on their platform and saving them together to make a ‘Board’. While on the other platform Pocket articles from the internet could be collected and added to my ‘My List’. They both involved saving content together in one place. Pinterest was more image focused while Pocket was more for articles. Both platforms allowed users to follow other users meaning information on both of these platforms could be shared. Pinterest allowed users to upload there own content which could be seen by other users on the platform, while Pocket did not have a feature for users to create any type of content. On pocket you could find articles from the internet and keep them in your list in pocket. Pocket had feature also allowing articles to be read to you instead of users having to read it to themselves. Both platforms were easy to use when it came to managing information.

Reflection

As a digital citizen it is important that we have the ability to engage with information and content online effectively. Actions such as creating and publishing are crucial to support our online engagements as digital citizens. With that being said, the social media tools I have used so far in this module have helped me to acquire the necessary skills and experience needed. For me to be capable to do this alone, the module activities especially in this portfolio helped me. Upon reflection, the work completed in this portfolio has no doubt improved my ability to engage with information in many different ways that will be useful once I leave college and enter the working world.

Social media tools I used in the portfolio included Pinterest and Pocket. Both of these platforms contained their own ways on managing information and content. On Pinterest for example, I was tasked with saving and organising content. This task showed me the way to gather content and save them all together in one place. Pocket on the other hand was more of a save for later type of platform. As I could gather different articles together and read them later. This bookmarking task gave me the valuable experience of managing information. As digital citizens, it is important we know how to find and manage all sorts of content and information.

One of my tasks included content creating using screencast o Matic, this part of the portfolio helped me to learn how to create and publish information. It was vital in helping me understand more clearly how to create content as a digital citizen. “With a massive growth in online social networking, digital infrastructures offer citizens new channels for speaking and acting together”(Bakardjieva, Svensson, & Skoric, 2012). Bakardjieva et al speak about how the growth in social networking offers new channels for speaking and acting together. This same logic applies to social media platforms that aid us in creating and sharing information to one another. Upon using screencast o Matic to create a video and then publishing and editing it on YouTube I realised how easy it is sharing information as digital citizens. Social media tools that have the ability to educate and to help people in need are the most important. For this task I also had to find information on the topic I wanted to use in the video, I found this part very interesting as finding important information is not always as easy as it seems.

“We live in a very complex and often overwhelming information world”(Eisenberg, Lowe, Spitzer, & Breivik, 2004). During the course of this portfolio, I learned how the world of engaging with information is an ever changing one. My tasks and work completed were documented on the Padlet platform. Padlet enabled me to add links to share it with others, to collaborate with others on their own Padlets and much more. It was a space where I could manage all the information I collected over the course of this assignment and to organise it effectively. All my tasks that I completed were documented there, along with information and content that I myself had created for this portfolio. The social media tools and platforms used in this module provided me with managing and organising skills, especially Padlet. This platform allowed me to upload different forms of content, links and more. Upon finishing my assignments I can say working in my padlet was the most enjoyable part of it all. As I really enjoyed gathering all my work in one place for me to read and correct for any mistakes.

In conclusion, as I reflect on the work done in this portfolio I can say it will improve my online engagement. The tasks completed have given me the necessary skills to continue learning and furthering my newly acquired skills as I now have a base to go from. As digital citizens it is important we adapt and learn new things. Before the completion o this portfolio I never knew how to create and manage content like I do now. This will help me in my studies going into the future and in my personal life. Work will be made easier for me to complete, as the work done in this assignment has boosted my confidence in my creative skills. My research skills have also been improved and during the course of this module I hope to continue this. “Overall, the respondents felt that Padlet increased motivation among the students during the writing assessment” (Jong & Tan, 2021). A study completed showed how the students believed padlet increased their motivation during an assessment and I couldn’t agree more from my experience. The platform made my work easier to manage as it was all there and made the portfolio easier to work on.

The policies outlined in my privacy policy are to protect users and to inform all users about what their data is used for. The reason I have decided to make this very clear is so that users feel free and comfortable on the platform. User safety played a massive part in these decisions as that is one of many priorities. Giving users the option to remove certain pieces of data or information from our system should give all our users peace of mind and allow us to only use the data of willing users.
