In 1066 (ten-sixty-six) King William I (the First) decided to build a big castle in London on the River Thames: the Tower of London. The works  finished in 1078 (ten-seventy-eight). The Tower became not only the royal palace, but also an armoury, an observatory and a prison for kings, queens, statesmen and churchmen, who often died by execution. Nowadays many tourists visit the Tower especially to see the Crown Jewels. The Yeoman Warders or Beefeaters guard the Tower and live there with their families. Maybe they were called Beefeaters as an insult, because in times of famine they had extra meat. A Beefeater called Ravenmaster looks after the ravens and clips their wings, because a legend says that the Kingdom will fall if the ravens leave the Tower. 

Nel 1066 il re Guglielmo I decise di costruire un grande castello a Londra sul Tamigi: la Torre di Londra. I lavori terminarono nel 1078. La Torre divenne non solo il palazzo reale, ma anche un’armeria, un osservatorio e una prigione per re, regine, statisti e ecclesiastici, che morirono spesso per esecuzione. Oggigiorno molti turisti visitano la Torre soprattutto per vedere i Gioielli della Corona. I Guardiani o i “mangiatori di manzo” sorvegliano la Torre e vivono lì con le loro famiglie. Forse furono chiamati “mangiatori di manzo” come un insulto, perché in tempi di carestia avevano carne in più. Un Beefeater chiamato “signore dei corvi” si prende cura dei corvi e taglia le loro ali, perché una leggenda dice che il Regno cadrà se i corvi abbandonano la Torre.

The British Museum is a museum of human history and culture. It houses objects from all the continents of the world, including the Marbles of the Parthenon and part of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. At the beginning it was a display of Sir Hans Sloane’s collection of objects. In 1801 (eighteen-ou-one) the British Museum acquired the Rosetta Stone, which is the key to understand Egyptian hieroglyphics. 

Il British Museum è un museo di storia e cultura umana. Ospita oggetti provenienti da tutti i continenti del mondo, compresi i marmi del Partenone e parte del Mausoleo di Alicarnasso. All'inizio era una mostra della collezione di oggetti di Sir Hans Sloane. Nel 1801 il British Museum acquisì la Stele di Rosetta, che è la chiave er comprendere i geroglifici egizi.

 

Hyde Park is one of London’s Royal Parks. It was acquired in 1536 (fifteen-thirty-six) by Henry VIII for hunting deer. The Serpentine, an artificial lake created in 1730 (seventeen-thirty), divides the park in two. In summer people can swim in the lake or hire boats. Tourists like the park very much. They can see the Holocaust Memorial, the Lady Diana Memorial Fountain, the Italian Garden.  The park is the ideal setting for concerts and international events. Many famous singers, such as Taylor Swift,  have performed concerts there. In the park there is an area where people can speak about political, social, religious or personal matters: it’s the Speaker’s Corner.  

Hyde Park è uno dei parchi reali di Londra. Fu acquistato nel 1536 da Enrico VIII per la caccia ai cervi. Il Serpentine, un lago artificiale creato nel 1730, divide il parco in due. In estate le persone possono nuotare nel lago o noleggiare barche. I turisti amano molto il parco. Possono vedere il memoriale dell'Olocausto, la fontana memoriale di Lady Diana, il giardino all'italiana. Il parco è la cornice ideale per concerti ed eventi internazionali. Molti cantanti famosi, come Taylor Swift, hanno tenuto concerti lì. Nel parco c'è un'area in cui le persone possono parlare di questioni politiche, sociali, religiose o personali: è l'angolo del parlatore.
