Hypocrisy- Hypocrisy is shown in the novel through Dimmesdale's actions, him being a pastor and preaching abstinence and yet committing adultery himself.

2. Revenge- Revenge is shown in the novel through Chillingworths actions. Chillingworth spends all him time attempting to find Hesters lover, and when he does, he attempts to poison him as much as possible. 

3. Identity- Identity is shown in the novel through Hester's actions. Hester's identity is forced on her by the townspeople, they give her an identity of a sinner, and a disgusting person. But Hester does all she can to be a good person, and be a loving mother; the opposite of what the people think.

2. Punishment vs. Forgiveness- Chillingworth is surprisingly forgiving of Hester's crime. We sense that he understands why she would forsake him. After all, he is deformed, he is older, he has not been nearby, while she is beautiful and passionate.
3. Sin and Judgment- Hawthorne's novel consistently calls into question the notion of sin and what is necessary for redemption. Is Hester's initial crime a sin? Guilt: Their union is only hidden in the forest. The sinful act of adultery, which is a guilt indeed, generates frustration in the lovers. Dimmesdale is tormented inwardly, while Hester is tormented outwardly with the scarlet letter.
2. Damnation: Reverend Dimmesdale seems to begin in purity and finally ends in corruption. The minister is his own deceiver; he is that truly damned man who convinces himself at every stage of his spiritual pilgrimage that his is really "saved".
3. Love: They have deep love for each other to unite them together. Although the different agents – Chillingworth, society, law, morality – try to bring their real love to a an end, they still succeed. On the other hand, it makes the two lovers strong – morally and spiritually.

The lesson that I took away from this novel is that from some mistakes, some good can come from it. Like DImmesdales and Hester sin brought Pearl.
