People would accuse others of being witches, if they didn't like them and wanted to get rid of them. Another reason would be if they were a little bit crazy, had some problems, was an outcast, or didn't attend church. These accusations had no evidence but the accused people were still either killed or put in jail. If you didn't confess to being a witch, you were killed and if you confessed you were put in jail. So most people said they were a witch, even if it wasn't true, just to save their life.

Puritans came to the new world, America for religious freedom. They wanted to start their own religion, that is pure and ruled by God. They established their colony in Massachusetts Bay. In the beginning, they struggled to grow food and survive the harsh winter. They blamed this problem on Satan's doing. They got help from the Native Americans and praised their God. Everything that happened to the puritans, they saw as God or Satan's' actions.

The puritans had certain beliefs that shaped their religion. They believed that everyone is born into sin as a sinner. Another strong belief of theirs was that people were randomly chosen to go to heaven or to be damned, go to hell. They wanted a government ruled by God. To put the bible, the church, and God over the government.

Witches were seen as the devil's workers. People who put sin on others and wherever they went, problems followed. The Puritans saw people with mental disabilities, drug and alcohol problems as possible witches. Several little girls were the first people to accuse others of being witches. Til this day we still don't know if the girls were telling the truth about the "witches" or if it was all just for attention.

The Un-American Activities committee accused people of being communist. It was a repeat of the witch trials, where people were being accused of something with no evidence. Arthur Miller was accused of being a communist, which he wasn't. So he fought back by writing a play to make a modern point, "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it". He wrote the crucible, which is a purifying revealing device.
