Another reason would be if they were a little bit crazy, had some problems, was an outcast, or didn't attend church. These accusations had no evidence but the accused people were still either killed or put in jail. If you didn't confess to being a witch, you were killed and if you confessed you were put in jail. It was a repeat of the witch trials, where people were being accused of something with no evidence. Arthur Miller was accused of being a communist, which he wasn't. So he fought back by writing a play to make a modern point, "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it". He wrote the crucible, which is a purifying revealing device.
