Why I like Lennie Small

Lennie Small is a migrant worker like George Milton, his friend and travelling companion. Due to his mental disability, Lennie is completely reliant on George. Both share a dream of owning a farm together, a dream that Lennie wholeheartedly believes and wants to tend the rabbits at. He is described as a large, lumbering and childlike character, having a man's body but the mind of a child, as Slim observes, 'He's jes' like a kid' (p.47). A gentle and kind character, he has never learnt how to control his strong body and does not understand his own physical strength. Nearly every scene in which Lennie appears confirms these are his only characteristics. Lennie loves to pet soft things, such as small animals, dresses and people's hair, this leads to many disasters. His enthusiasm for the vision of their future farm proves contagious as he convinces George, Candy, Crooks, and the reader that such a paradise might be possible even though the dream is almost impossible and has been tried and failed many times before.

Steinbeck's repetition of Lennie's characteristics is key to the novel. Steinbeck makes Lennie the least dynamic character in the book, undergoing no significant development or change as a character and remaining exactly as the readers first impressions in the opening pages. Although this makes Lennie a flat character, Lennie's simplicity has a powerful impact.Since a tragedy seems to be inevitable, the reader must know from the start that Lennie is doomed, and must be sympathetic with the character because of his helplessness in the face of events and the fact that he is totally defenceless and is unable to avoid the dangers presented to him. He is a character whom Steinbeck sets up for disaster, a character whose innocence only seems to ensure his inevitable ending.

In Of Mice And Men, Lennie Small is one of the main characters, despite his last name, he is one of the physically strongest characters in the book. On the flip side, he is the weakest mentally and acts as if he is an 8 year old. - Vincent

George is Lennie's friend. They've been through a lot. George is basically Lennie's mentor. Everything that Lennie knows is because of George.

I like George as he's intelligent, trustworthy and helpful. He is always there for Lennie. Lennie would be nothing without George.

One of the only reasons why I dislike George is when he killed Lennie. I understand that he had to but It didn't have to go like that. They could've done what they did in Weed, ran away.

In conclusion I like George. He's an independant man who is always there for people.

-A short summary by Issac "Epic" Davies.

Also enjoy my representation of George and Lennie. ==

Why Slim is a proper lad

Slim is the "prince of the ranch." He's the consummate Western man: masterful, strong, fair-minded, practical, non-talkative, and exceptionally good at what he does. He is a god among men, and his word on any subject is law. Do you want it in Steinbeck's own words?
…he moved with a majesty only achieved by royalty and master craftsman. He was a jerkline skinner, the prince of the ranch, capable of driving ten, sixteen, even twenty mules with a single line to the leaders. He was capable of killing a fly on the wheeler's butt with a bull whip without touching the mule. There was a gravity in his manner and a quiet so profound that all talk stopped when he spoke, His authority was so great that his word was taken on any subject, be it politics or love. This was Slim, the jerkline skinner.
Simmer down, Steinbeck. I'm pretty sure the feeling isn't mutual.
Slim's "authority" means that he gets to decide who deserves justice, and who deserves a little leniency. He's good at reading character, saying "I can tell a mean guy from a mile off" and, unlike some other people in the novel, he's not saying that out of ego. It's just true.
When Slim does lie, he lies for the good of the group or to protect the weak. After Lennie crushes Curley's hand, Slim tells Curley what to do: "I think you got your han' caught in a machine. If you don't tell nobody what happened, we ain't going to. But you jus' tell an' try to get this guy canned and we'll tell ever'body, an' then will you get the laugh".
This is the kind of lie where you tell your friend that you like her new haircut because you don't want to hurt her feelings: the damage has been done, and now you just have to try to smooth it over until the bangs grow back. As unofficial judge and jury of the ranch, Slim gets to decide who's in the right (Lennie) and what the punishment is (not being able to retaliate).
In the end, Slim is the only one who understand what George has done—and why. As the novel's moral center (and possible author avatar), he okays the mercy killing: Never you mind," he says to George: "A guy got to sometimes" . According to Slim's Man Code, if someone has to die, it's better to do it yourself. You can't let a stranger kill your friends.

If that's not love, I don't know what is.
