Mental health problem: It is hard for the mentally unhealthy/unstable to trust others. when feeling down, or having insecurities etc., people inherently want to be affirmed by someone and comforted, but are ultimately overpowered by their fear of reaching out to others and exposing their own failures and problems. Also, the struggle to find a judgment-free zone and overcome all the human problems with opening up (like having to think whether the other party will be affected by what you say ) make it difficult for someone to open up. Also, humans are not always free to talk, giving a sense of unreliability. Overthinking worsens this as they find it hard to trust anyone.

Technological solution: Chatbots powered by AI reply within their limited capabilities

explanation: they give the perceived safety of not being judged by anyone, and allow people to vent their emotions in a safe space with a dependable response affirming them. Also, it avoids the human complications of power dynamics, taking into account the other party’s emotions and other difficulties that come up when opening up to someone real. Bots have no emotions and always provide the desired response. They are dependable and ever present, making them easy to trust. In the hardship-adverse mindset, this is a much easier and simpler solution to overcome that desire to reach out.

problem: they are robots and cannot empathise.

This environment can be programmed to help the person directly confront feared situations or locations that may not be safe to encounter in real life. These can include claustrophobia, fear of driving, acrophobia, fear of flying, arachnophobia, and social anxiety. In the US, this is specifically used for veterans with PTSD
