She had a rough start to her life when her father left her family when she was only three. Difficulties forced her to leave school at a young age and find a position at the Cotton Club in Harlem,  as a chorus dancer. Horne had a passion for singing and acting. As a result, this led her to be a very important artist in the Harlem Renaissance.  
 
   Horne was hired for her beauty, but she worked diligently to improve her singing by taking lessons. Later on, she got married in 1937 to Louis Jordan Jones.  Her popularity continued to grow with her roles in an important 1943 film, Stormy Weather and Cabin in the Sky.  A year later Horne got a divorce from her husband. Horne became involved in the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. She joined Martin Luther King, Jr., on his March on Washington. She worked with the National Council of Black Women, and appeared at numerous protests throughout the United States, mainly in the South. 
  
  Horne participated in 13 major films and won multiple awards such as a Tony Award, Grammy Award, Grammy Hall of  Fame Award, and more. Horne continued to perform intermittently until 2000 when she retired for the final time. Horne lived a very long life. She died in May 2010 at the age of 92 because of heart failure.
