Calling teachers by first name

I was interested in what Dennis said at the welcome about how students address teachers by their first names. I have not taught full-time in a classroom, but in my substitute experience, I was told in advance by the teacher that I should go by "Mr. Bowman", so that the kids will respect me. During the lunch break today, I ask an 11th grade student what he felt about calling teachers by their first names. He felt that it was more respectable because teachers were treating students like adults. What do former teachers think about students addressing teachers by their first names? If you think this is a good idea, at what age/grade do you think it should begin?
