I chose the video “Comparing My Life.” It is about a girl named Natalia who is a freshman in high school. In this video, she discusses comparing herself to others and the impact it had on her. This video relates to the “Inclusive” competency because she feels there are certain stereotypes she must meet because of her race. It relates to the “Informed” competency because she was able to use her knowledge and get past the stereotype to make a meaningful decision. The video relates to the “Engaged” competency because she could choose whether she wanted to be in interesting courses that she enjoyed or honors courses that were boring. It relates to the “Balanced” competency because she was able to self-reflect to determine that honors courses would not be the best choice for her. Finally, it relates to the “Alert” competency because she had friends who were able to notice and support her struggle.

I chose the podcast "Dress Codes: They Need to be Addressed!" Alyssa's project is a change for dress codes. She first shares her own experience with dress codes. Whenever there was a dress code, everyone would still break it. But their were consequences if you did not follow dress code, such as, detention. She goes on to state the the average amount of clothing banned is between 32-97 items, mainly targeting women. Her belief is that schools are not allowing student's to express themselves. Her purpose is to change school dress codes and allow students to express themselves through their clothing. This relates to being inclusive as she recognizes that dress codes should be fair to everyone, not just targeting women. Next, this relates to being informed as she cited her sources she used in this podcast and did the research before presenting this topic. This also relates to being engaged because this was a way to engage in solving the problem of banned clothing in schools. As well as relating to balance because she does understand why we have dress codes, but she wants to tweak it to make it fair for everyone. And lastly, this relates to being alert, she is aware that making this podcast, others will view it and wants to create a safe environment for everyone.

For this activity I chose to listen to the podcast "Electronic devices and how they affect child's grown" by Jose A. In his podcast he mentions about how we need to balance out our time with technology to be a good digital citizen. He explained that his 4 year old cousin received an iPad and when the parents attempted to take it away - she yelled and was not able to regulate her emotions. He understood that she needed to be taught about balancing out her time with and without technology. A solution he encouraged was following the Mayo Clinic advice with technology and to set up "screen free" time. I think this reflects the standard of being balanced with technology in order to be a good digital citizen.

I chose the podcast "Living Life on a Screen" by Fiona R. This podcast talks about the negative of being too involved in social media. Fiona speaks about how she did not grow up with a phone, so due to this she feels she has more positive outcomes compared to those who got a phone at a young age. The podcast addresses that although there are pros and cons to technology and social media, the creator believes the cons outweigh the positive. This topic relate to the 5 digital citizenship competencies and the ISTE standards in many ways. First, this topic relates to the balance competency. Social media is good in moderation, and this is exactly what the point of balance is. It also reminded me of the informed competency because the purpose of the podcast was to inform. if we inform from a young age how to be safe with online surroundings. If we use the 5 competencies and standards to inform and instruct children about technology from a young age, we can limit the negative of social media and phones and instead use the benefits.

For this activity I chose to listen to "Mental Health Matters: Teenage Stress and Anxiety" by Julia G. She talks about how mental health is very prominent in her life and every teenager. She talks about how teens do not have time to just "take a break", they need time to indulge in self care. Her fix is homework free weekends because she understand the benefits of learning and homework, but also believes her and her fellow teens deserve a break from stressing. She does a great job of using the 5 digital citizenship competencies (alert, inclusive, informed, balanced, and engaged) She has solid sources, with strong data. She is alert and bringing awareness to a very important topic and is being inclusive in her language throughout her podcast. She does a great job at making sure no one is alone, that she is struggling too and wants to be a voice to help others. Julia used ISTE Standard 2 by addressing implications that stem from technology and demonstrating communicating trough technology. She used ISTE Standard 3 because she gathered and analyzed sources to find data that supported what she was passionate about.

I watched the video "Technology Addiction and the Design Tricks" By Aidan J. He discusses the ways that social media and their engineers purposefully design the apps to keep users "glued to [their] screen for as long as possible". He describes the days of past where technology was a great tool or addition to life, but how recently it seems to have a crazy grip and control on our lives. Aiden's Video connects to the Digital Competencies, especially the last 4. His purpose in his video is to Inform his viewers about the social media platform's schemes and keep them Alert to how much they are letting the apps control their lives. He never calls for a lack of Engagement, and actually encourages his viewers to read out to policy makers and ask for change. His main purpose is that we as humans need to find a healthy Balance between human interactions and scrolling online.

The video did an excellent job of demonstrating the five digital competencies through her informative video about mental health and how overbearing parents can cause students unnecessary stress. The video is inclusive as it includes a personal narrative about her own struggles of being a first generation student and how her struggles can be relatable or new information for some. She is informed as she made sure to include a variety of reliable resources and statistics about the mental health of first generation students. Her video engages with the viewers as she warns them not to compare their own experiences as non-first generation students and emphasizes that no two students struggles can be compared. She makes a balanced video that includes personal narrative, statistical information, and provides viewers with a list of solutions for this serious issue. Finally, her video is alert as she maintains privacy by not oversharing, and remaining professional in the context of the video.

I chose the Technology Addiction and the design tricks by Aiden J. I found this one the most interesting due to the constant debate of how much screen time is too much screen time. This is a perfect example of how to understand balance. Aiden talks about how companies are trying to get you addicted to their apps. If we spend too much time glued to our screens or doom scrolling we are hindering ourselves. When it comes to students if they are focused more on their phones instead of doing homework it will only hurt them in the long run. I think that as educators we need to learn to utilize these tricks to make learning more interesting for our students.

I have a personal connection to the debate about how much screen time is too much, so I was very interested in this source.

I choose "Breaking the Screen Spell: Reclaiming Our Time and Mental Wellbeing" by Yugio Z. This one discusses how teenagers spend too much time on their phones on social media apps or playing video games. Yugio discusses some statistics about how 50% of teenagers would say they are addicted to technological devices and how teenagers spend 1/3 of their days looking at a screen. He then suggested that students could delete social media from their phones and only have access to it on computers. He also suggests that students find something physical to engage with alternatively. This project reflects the competency of Balance, which is about how a digital citizen should be able to prioritize the time they spend online and off. it relates to the ISTE standard of engaging in positive behavior when using technology.

I choose this one because I have also struggled with being balanced in my online time and offline time. Social media and ads online are used to suck us into our screens and keep us "mindlessly scrolling" as Aiden J. puts it. I believe that he does display the 5 digital competencies in this video. He is inclusive because he respectfully provides us with information. He does not bash anyone in the video for their use of technology or makes anyone feel bad. He is informed because he provides multiple sources in his video on how tech companies use design practices to people on their phone. He is balanced because he is advocating for people to take their time back and understand that offline time is very important. He is engaged because he is advocating for change and is pushing technology users to hold tech companies that create addictive apps accountable. He is also alert because although he shares his personal experience with addictive apps, he does not share private information about himself to keep himself safe online.
