Regardless of the circumstance, Ms Gruwell, engages students with resources that are tailored to their interests and that speak to them. For instance, Ms. Gruwell encouraged students to study the journals and diaries of people like Anne Frank. Students' lost hope was restored as a result. She also, found books learners could relate too. They were more motivated to learn as a result.

She also used the student centered method, where she only acted as a facilitator such as "line game" to inspire, motivate, and foster relationships amongst the learners.

Ms. Gruwell mostly bases her lessons on progressivism and constructivism. She encourages her students to actively learn by using experiences from real life. Moreover, she changed the lives of her students by developing an educational philosophy that respects and encourages diversity. She urged them to reevaluate their fixed ideas about themselves and other people, their everyday choices, and ultimately their futures.

Keating tries to relate his lessons to concepts that his students already understand, such as reading poetry to music and kicking a soccer ball. They understood from this that different poetic readings might be done depending on the tone or mood of the poem.

Another example of Mr. Keating's methods is how standing at a desk allows students to get new perspective and alter their worldview.

Mr. Keating's unorthodox teaching strategies are central with progressivism since he emphasises the uniqueness and nonconformity that should accompany education. His approach to education encourages students to "seize the day" this means, to take advantage of the moment while it lasts before their possibilities and potential are lost.

Many of Keating's other students are driven to pursue their own unique hobbies in life and disregard advice from their parents and other Welton professors. He adopts a parental tone, for example, when he asks one of his students, Neil, to join him in his office for tea, and they discuss having a dictatorial father. He offers him guidance and counsels him to "remain true to himself." Furthermore, he advises him not to tell his father a lie because doing so will distract him, but rather to tell him about his love for acting.

Both the progressivism and constructivism would be relevant philosophies to use in the South African context because of the similar issues faced, such as racism, Gangsterism, dropping out of school and exposure to poverty. We need teachers who are not only interested in delivering the content but who want to change the learners who are mostly considered to be unteachable and hopeless.

Also, the South African teachers still follow the traditional methods of teaching, while the 21st century century teachers are eager and are motivated to change that despite the what the curriculum says we ought to do.

The students went to guest lectures and a field excursion to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, where they met Holocaust survivors who shared traumatic experiences with them. This was done in order for them to encounter racism, intolerance, death, and injustice in a different setting.
