In our family, our holy sacraments were very important. Being raised as catholic it is a common thing to have all your sacraments by the time you turn 18. Because my parents were younger and were raised here, I feel like my parents did not force our religion onto us as much as other people I know. We were able to express ourselves and were not told to dress or look a certain way. Our religion was also the foundation to our doings and we attended church during important events like psalm Sunday, the 12th of December and the 24th.

In my Mexican-American community, economic shifts have played a major role in shaping our opportunities and hardships. Many of us come from working class backgrounds where financial stability is often tied to low wages or labor intensive jobs. Economic inequality has limited access to upward mobility, affordable housing, and healthcare, creating persistent barriers for multiple generations. These economic struggles have also influenced the way we advocate for change, such as through local mutual aid networks or support for labor rights.

Education has served both as a tool of empowerment and as a mirror of inequality in my community. While many of us were raised to value education as a pathway to success, systemic barriers like underfunded schools, cultural disconnects, and hidden curriculums have disproportionately affected first-generation students. Despite these challenges, our community has shown resilience by promoting educational attainment and supporting each other through mentorship, bilingual outreach, and scholarship programs.

The intersection of public health and state policy has deeply affected my community’s experiences with social change. From lack of healthcare access to the heightened policing of neighborhoods of color, these systems have shaped not just outcomes, but also our sense of trust and safety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, we saw a disparity in care and protection that reignited conversations around systemic neglect and advocacy for better services.
