Building relationships and respect is incredibly important. Students need to feel respected and cared about. We as educators need to be the example for students. By showing students respect, they learn how to give respect. By taking the time to get to know your students on a more personal level, you show students that you care on a different level. I will continue to work on building relationships with students and staff. I will work to ensure that others feel respected and valued.

Clarity has always been my biggest struggle. I plan well, but I speak like "Jane Austen". Detailed. Long. Explanations. I have caught myself at times and simplified my instructions, but this is the rule that I break the most. My goal is to start by focusing on giving one direction at a time for the next few weeks and writing the steps on the board for students who move quicker and want to continue on their own. :)

There are a couple key points that stuck out to me with this rule... "You can positively affect students' states of mind simply by being in a positive state" (p.31). Students can sense or "feel" our feelings--whether positive or negative---which is why it is so important to show up to work every day with passion and excitement. This rule also talks about the importance of nurturing our own passion, alleviating stress, and finding more joy in our lives... This is so critical to staying positive at work each day.

#1 - Upgrading your attitude is all about how you approach your day and students. I think that if students see the adults in the building with a positive attitude and working together as teams, that ultimately this will rub off on the students as well. Your thoughts control your emotions, and your emotions control your actions.
#2 - Building relationships is such a big part of our students' life. They need to see that we care, want to be involved, but also that we are human. Share your life with them, and let them share with you. I have been saying good morning to all the students as they walk into the hallway each day.

Rule #1 Upgrade Your Attitude -If I come to school and have a bad attitude for whatever reason with things I may have going on outside of school the students will likely notice that. I want to use my drive in to focus and shake it off for the day so that I can have a positive attitude starting my day in hopes that that will rub off on the students. I also believe that this rule can be tied into Rule #2. There are times when the kids may be having an off day and need help getting their attitudes in check so that it doesn't ruin their whole day or get them into any trouble. If we can build relationships with students so that they feel comfortable talking to us, we can then try to help them shake off their poor attitudes or develop strategies with them to do this on their own.

Build Relationships and Respect
This rule is very important for me in the coming weeks. I will be starting to pull students and I need focus on building those relationships. I want to focus on taking away any of the anxiety that may be associated with coming to my classroom. First I want to find common ground with my students by sharing bits about myself each day. I think this will help build those connections and help my students to feel that they can be open in my classroom. I also believe it will be important to share my own struggles in my journey though math. I want to create that positive space where growth feels possible. Finally, I want to build relationships by sharing this mantra: "I care about you. You have value. You don't have to do anything to prove it to me. Nothing is going to change my mind." This statement of unconditional positive regard is there to further build that space where growth is possible and mistakes are okay.

Build Relationships and Respect. After spending my entire career teaching in high poverty schools, I have come to believe that this is the number one rule of teaching. I liked when he said that part about if students don't know how much you care, they won't care. I need to remind myself of this all the time. I love the quote by Hiram Ginnott that states that teachers are the decisive element in the classroom. Everybody wants to be respected, students included. I need to work getting more buy-in. When it comes to the curriculum, I need to "sell it" better.

Math has alot of complicated words that are not the most student friendly. At times it’s eaiser to just move on and assume the students understand the words but you should really take the time to break down a much easier wording for them. An example I used today was for “simplifying the expression.” We were able to breakdown those words down to “make it smaller and easier.” Taking the time to clarify in the short term will greatly increase your time in the long term and save you many headaches later on.

I have been focusing on #2) building relationships and respect this year. I will be trying to do more of the solution: Share a bit of yourself every day. While I am always willing and happy to answer students' questions about myself, I do not share a lot about myself otherwise. I have been trying to share more about myself and my various life experiences.

“I’ve come to a frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or dehumanized.”

I believe that our number 1 priority should be to Upgrade Our Attitude. This could be staff to staff as well as staff to student. Sometimes a pleasant word to another staff member is enough to turn their day around, too. For students, it can change their whole day. Once you have upgraded your attitude, you can start to employ the other rules. I don't believe that there is one that is more important but just that there is an order in which you need to incorporate them. I am first incorporating the attitude upgrade.
