The calculations are used in navigation "to calculate the latitude of a ship at sea from two altitudes of the sun, and the longitude from the distances of the moon from a celestial body." (Wikipedia)  In addition to publishing his nautical astronomy calculations, he also improved the reflecting circle, which is used to measure the angles for navigation. Mendozas work benefited navigation which was used to take more precise measurements for Lunar Navigation.

I chose a Spanish ancestor to learn something new from my culture. In addition, I chose someone no many people know about related to an interesting subject like navigation and astronomy.
