- William Strauss and Neil Howe identified repeating cycles of generational values.
- Identified 4 different generational archetypes, or universal symbols or patterns.
*ARCHETYPE: A universal symbol or pattern.
- Generational values alternate between 4 distinct eras, which Strauss & Howe called TURNINGS.
- These turnings are called : High, Awakening, Unravelling and finally Crisis.
BREAKING DOWN THE TURNINGS:
Turning 1: High
Occurs after a crisis. During "the high", institutions are strong (people are uniformed) and individualism is weak.
Turning 2: Awakening
This is an era when institutions are attacked in the name of personal and spiritual autonomy.
Turning 3: Unravelling
The mood of this era they say is in many ways the opposite of a High: Institutions are weak and distrusted, while individualism is strong and flourishing.
Turning 4: Crisis
This is an era of destruction, often involving war, in which institutional life is destroyed and rebuilt in response to a perceived threat to the nation's survival.
- Strauss and Howe predicted in 1997 that the next fourth turning would spark in 2005.
BREAKING DOWN THE ARCHETYPES:
1. Prophet:This generation enters childhood during the High. Time of rejuvenated community life & consensus around a new societal order.
2. Nomad: Enter childhood during an Awakening, a time of social ideals and spiritual agendas, when young adults are passionately attacking the established institutional order. They grow up as under protected children during the Awakening.
3. Hero: OUR GENERATION
Enter childhood after an Awakening, during an Unravelling, a time of individual pragmatism, self-reliance, and laissez-faire. Heroes grow up as increasingly protected post-Awakening children, come of age as team-oriented young optimists during a Crisis, emerge as energetic, overly confident midlifers, and age into politically powerful elders attacked by another Awakening.
4. Artist: Enter childhood after an Unravelling, during a Crisis, a time when great dangers cut down social and political complexity in favour of public consensus, aggressive institutions, and an ethic of personal sacrifice.
If you want more details there's a video attached below which can help clarify the turnings and archetypes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9qcV89oFIw
Works Cited:
- Strauss-Howe Generational Theory.

The Millennial Generation includes people who were born between early 1980's - 2000 and grew up in an era of expanding globalization, cultural diversity, and technological advances. They are characteristically described as:

1) Millennials are considered Optimistic and moral compared to other generations. They tend to avoid listening to negative information that they are presented with
2) Considered to be good at multitasking, they can juggle many responsibilities at once but this means that they get distracted easily.
3) Confident, with well developed self-esteem. They are only of the mostly educated generations but the least likely to have served in the military
4) They are more culturally aware and diverse. This is because they generally are more likely to have friend groups who are more diverse and represent a wide range of cultures
5) They are described as skilled net workers and technologically connected. This is because they were born in the era where technology was dominating and advancing.
6) Millennials are aware of their civic duty. This is due to the fact that they were grew up in a world of economic recession and are also more aware of global environmental situations.
7) They are receptive to change. This is because Millennials grew up in a constantly changing environment from fashion trends to technology innovations which allows them to be flexible and have the ability to adapt.
8) They are global citizens. This can be explained by the fact that they are more racially diverse and through traveling, they can view other perspectives. As mentioned before they also care about the world and it's future more than their own country conflicts and struggles.

https://business.linkedin.com/talent-solutions/blog/2013/12/8-millennials-traits-you-should-know-about-before-you-hire-them
“8 Millennials Traits You Should Know About Before You Hire Them.” LinkedIn Talent Blog, business.linkedin.com/talent-solutions/blog/2013/12/8-millennials-traits-you-should-know-about-before-you-hire-them.

https://www.livescience.com/38061-millennials-generation-y.html
Main, Douglas. “Who Are the Millennials?” LiveScience, Purch, 8 Sept. 2017, www.livescience.com/38061-millennials-generation-y.html.
