Frederick Douglas was an African-American Abolitionist during the 1800s. Douglas once was a slave but escaped his life of slavery from Maryland. As a slave, Douglass was taught to read by his slave owner's wife. It took three attempts for Douglass to escape slavery with the help of Anna Murray, a free black woman. After his life as a slave, Frederick Douglass took on his life as being a leader of the Abolition Movement. His inspiration came from William Lloyd Garrison, whose influence also sparked him to write. In 1847, Frederick published the North Star, a anti-slavery newspaper to bring about awareness of the negative aspects of slavery, and to help "lead slaves to freedom". In addition to this achievement, Frederick Douglass also published "My Freedom, and "My Bondage", outlining his life as a slave and how he obtained his freedom. Frederick Douglass was a key reformer in the Abolition Movement.

John Brown was an abolitionist who wanted immediate change of slavery, and believed that the only way to end slavery was to use force. Brown was radical in his beliefs and actions, like when he seized the US Arsenal. This was done to allow for slaves to potentially have weapons to fight for their freedom. This plan did not work, and Brown was charged with treason and was hanged on December 2, 1859. In addition, Brown was also a conductor in the underground railroad. As a conductor of the underground railroad, Brown organized a self-protection league for fugitive slaves. John Brown believed that he was chosen by God to lead slaves into their freedom, and he dedicated his life to helping the cause, and even gave up his life for what he believed should be done.

The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was a systematic route system that helped to lead slaves to freedom. This system was in fact not at all underground, and not a railroad. The actions that took place in the Underground Railroad were done in secret and used terms used in railroading, to disguise, and keep secret of what was going on. The routes stretched in 14 northern states, as well as some parts of Canada, and around 100,000 slaves used this system to escape from slavery. Without the Underground Railroad, many slaves would have not been able to escape from a life of slavery and see their freedom. Truly, the Underground railroad was a life saver for slaves, as well as a means of hope for them to achieve their freedom.

Nat Turner's Rebellion

Nat Turner was a slave from Southampton County, VA, who led out the only effective slave rebellion. At a young age, Nat Turner was very intelligent and was a great reader. He claimed to have certain visions, and get messages from God, which sparked the interest in leading the slave rebellion. He and around 50 other slaves took out the rebellion, killing 55 whites which included men, woman, and children. This rebellion effected slavery by showing how upset slaves were as being captives and that they should be set free. The Rebellion of Nat Turner signified the anger and hate that the slaves had for the whites that stole them of their freedom. Nat Turner took a stand for his fellow slaves, and represented for all slaves that they could be powerful. This event helped to spark actions by others to take part in the fight to end slavery.

Uncle Tom's Cabin is a novel about anti-slavery, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This novel was the best selling novel in the 19th century. Uncle Tom's Cabinimpacted slavery by giving readers a look into the life of a slave and his family, and seeing the daily struggles and how slavery effected families of slaves. This novel clearly illustrates to readers, the agony, and hardships that slavery has, and that no one should be treated or live like this. Harriet Beecher Stowe brought an emotional appeal to her readers to make them have pity and sympathy for enslaved African Americans, and bring awareness to ending slavery. Uncle Tom's Cabin has a huge effect on the Abolition Movement, and signifies what itwas like being a slave.

Wilmot Proviso

The Wimot Proviso was a bill that was first introduced by Congressman David Wilmot. This bill was designed to eliminate slavery in the land that was newly obtained by the US from Mexico. This bill was hated by the south, who wanted slavery in this new area of land, to further grow their plantations, and crops. The arguments about this bill helped to form the Republican Party in 1854. With the national conflict of slavery, many people wanted to stop the spread of slavery and potentially end it. Abolitionists like David Wilmot, wanted to make change and end slavery. By creating the Wilmot Proviso, this tremendously helped with the influence of ending slavery by not allowing it in certain parts of the US. The Proviso is significant because it was a large step taken that helped to bring awareness and limitations to slavery.
