Pillars of Islamic Belief and a story about Ummu Haram

The five pillars of Islam define the basic identity of Muslims – their faith, beliefs and practices – and bind together a worldwide community of over a billion believers into a fellowship of shared values and concerns.

*Shahadah (Testimony of Faith)

The profession of faith, is the first pillar of Islam. Muslims bear witness to the oneness of God by reciting the creed,
“There is no true God worthy of worship but God and Muhammad is the last and final Messenger of God.”

This simple yet profound statement expresses a Muslim’s complete acceptance of and total commitment to Islam.

*Salah (Prayer)
Salah, is the second pillar. The Islamic faith is based on the belief that individuals have a direct relationship with God. The world’s Muslims turn individually and collectively to Makkah, Islam’s holiest city, to offer five daily prayers at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and evening. In addition, Friday congregational service is also required. Although salah can he performed alone, it is meritorious to perform it with another person or with a group. It is permissible to pray at home, at work, or even outdoors; however, it is recommended that Muslims perform salah in a mosque.

*Zakat

Social responsibility is considered part of one’s service to God; the obligatory act of zakat enshrines this duty. Zakat prescribes payment of fixed proportions of a Muslim’s possessions for the welfare of the entire community and in particular for its neediest members. It is equal to 2.5% of an individual’s total net worth, excluding obligations and family expenses.

*Sawm (Fasting)
Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, is the fourth pillar of Islam. Ordained in the Holy Qur’an, the fast is an act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a richer perception of God. Fasting is also an exercise in self-control whereby one’s sensitivity is heightened to the sufferings of the poor. Ramadan, the month during which the Holy Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, begins with the sighting of the new moon, after which abstention from eating, drinking and other sensual pleasures is obligatory from dawn to sunset.Ramadan is also a joyful month. Muslims break their fast at sunset with a special meal, iftar, perform additional nocturnal worship, tarawih, after evening prayer; and throng the streets in moods that are festive and communal. The end of Ramadan is observed by a day of celebration called Eid Al-Fitr, the feast of the breaking of the fast. Customarily, it is a time for family reunion and the favoured holiday for children who receive new clothing and gifts.
*Hajj (Pilgrimage)
The pilgrimage to Makkah, is the fifth pillar and the most significant manifestation of Islamic faith and unity in the world. For those Muslims who are physically and financially able to make the journey to Makkah, the Hajj is a once in a lifetime duty that is the peak of their religious life. The Hajj is a remarkable spiritual gathering of over two million Muslims from all over the world to the holy city. In performing the Hajj, a pilgrim follows the order of ritual that the Prophet Muhammad performed during his last pilgrimage.

Story about Ummu Haram

Umm Haram Binti Malhan is the sister of Umm Sulaim RA who is the aunt of Anas Bin Malik, a young man who often helped Rasulullah salallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam in various matters. Umm Haram and her sister were also among the Anshar women who pledged allegiance to Rasulullah. Baiat is a promise to Rasulullah to follow him and follow in spreading the teachings of Tawhid. To make Ummu Haram one of the first women to embrace the teachings of Islam. Umm Haram herself, is a woman who has high intentions to participate in jihad and fight on the side of the Prophet. But unfortunately, his wish has never been achieved even until the death of the Prophet. Let's see the completeness of the story of Ummu Haram Binti Malhan.

Some pillars of iman

❤Belief in Allah
To believe in Allah is to believe that there is only one God worthy of worship, with no partner, or son. This concept is known as Tawheed. Also, it is to completely believe in the way He is described in the Quran, Sunnah and in His 99 names.
(Allah clearly explains Tawheed in the Holy Qur’an as He says, “Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to him any equivalent.”) (Quran, 112:1-4)

❤Belief in His Angels
The angels are messengers of Allah and are created from light. They were created before humans, for the purpose of worshipping and obeying Allah. Angels do not sleep, eat or suffer from illnesses. It is crucial to believe in the angels, as they keep a record of our deeds. Some of the other duties of angles include: blowing the trumpet on judgment day, taking people’s souls (i.e. angel of death) and to be the keepers of heaven and hell.
(“Who so disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His Messengers and the Last Day, he verily has wandered far astray.”) (Quran, 4:136)

❤Belief in His books
Allah revealed books to his messengers as a form of guidance and proof for mankind. Among these books, is the Quran, which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Allah has guaranteed the protection of the Quran from any distortion or corruption. The books that were sent and known to man are:

The Scrolls (Suhof) to Ibrahim

The Psalms (Zaboor) sent with the Prophet Dawud (David),

The Torah (Torah) sent with the Prophet Musa (Moses),

The Gospel (Injeel) sent with Prophet Isa (Jesus),

The Quran sent with Prophet Muhammad.

Muslims believe in all of the books revealed to the messengers. However, they only follow the Quran, as it is the final revelation, and aim to implement the rulings into their daily lives, as instructed by God and prophet Muhammad.
(“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.”) (Quran, 15:9)

:

💕Ihsan, which means excellence in belief is the neglected 1/3 of our deen. It is to believe in God Almighty without the slightest speck of doubt. It is similar in idea to the bodhisattva concept the Buddhists hold. And, when attained, it is like the "icing on the cake," for the believer and his or her faith. "Ihsan is the fruit that blossoms from our planted trees and shows up when the roots are strong and nourished, free from disease and harmful insects. If we fail to nourish our Iman by submitting to Allah, we will bear no fruit and our soul will die. But look into the Islamic legacy. It is rich with ihsan. All the achievements in art, science, architecture, literature, geography, politics, economics, social movement, philosophy, medicine and more came from the Muslims' desire to attain ihsan. Ihsan is our lost treasure that we must unearth and revive.

💕Ihsan...what does it mean? Like so many other Arabic words that I have mentioned, it has a vast array of meanings. It cannot be summed up prettily in one English word or phrase. Ihsan is excellence. It is perfection. It is beauty. It is balance, harmony, discipline, good character, softness, gentleness, improvement, drive, will power. Ihsan is a human reflection, a human attempt to achieve a high level in the areas covered by the reveled 99 beautiful names of Allah (swt).

💕In Surat Ar-Rahman, (Quranic chapter "The Merciful"), Allah (swt) uses one of the most powerful and difficult to use literary devices - the rhetorical question. If you have studied literature to any extent, you will know that the rhetorical question can only be used in very special, particularized situations and it can only be used when the author has much confidence and much leverage in the answer and the motivation for asking the question. The rhetorical device is amazing because, as it gives the answer to the question away, it leaves the reader to contemplate deeply on the meaning of the question, and the profound reasons behind the obvious. Allah (swt), in Surat Ar-Rahman, conquers this literary device and uses it in truly miraculous ways

💞A huge number of verses in Qura’n and several sayings of the Prophet Muhammad indicate the great importance that has been given to environmental concerns and the responsibility of man to the environment. The concept of sustainable development in Islam can be defined as “The balanced and simultaneous realization of consumer welfare, economic efficiency, attainment of social justice, and ecological balance in the framework of a evolutionary knowledge-based, socially interactive model defining the Shuratic process”. The Shuratic process is the consultation or participatory ruling principle of Islam.

Water Rights
In the Shariah, there is a responsibility placed on upstream farms to be considerate of downstream users. A farm beside a stream is forbidden to monopolize its water. After withholding a reasonable amount of water for his crops, the farmer must release the rest to those downstream. Furthermore, if the water is insufficient for all of the farms along the stream, the needs of the older farms are to be satisfied before the newer farm is permitted to irrigate. This reflects the sustainable utilization of water based on its safe yield.

Sustainable Forestry
Islamic legislation on the preservation of trees and plants finds its roots in Qura’nic teachings of Prophet. They include the following: “Whoever plants a tree and looks after it with care, until it matures and becomes productive, will be rewarded in the Hereafter” and “If anyone plants a tree or sows a field and men, beasts or birds eat from it, he should consider it as a charity on his part”. He is also reported to have encouraged tree planting as a constructive practice, saying that even if one hour remained before the final hour and one has a palm-shoot in his hand, he should plant it. Even at times of war, Muslim leaders, such as Abu Baker, advised their troops not to chop down trees and destroy agriculture or kill an animal.

Public Participation
The protection, conservation, and development of the environment and natural resources is a mandatory religious duty to which every Muslim should be committed. This commitment emanates from the individual’s responsibility before God to protect himself and his community. God has said, “Do good, even as God has done you good, and do not pursue corruption in the earth. God does not love corrupters”.

1 – IT FORCES we OUT OF OUR COMFORT ZONE

If there are areas of our job that we do not like, or are not good at, those are the weaknesses that a personal development plan can help we improve on. Confronting these areas and improving on them can help to push you out of our comfort zone. This allows us to experience growth and to improve your skills.

2 – IT DEVELOPS OUR STRENGTHS

A personal development plan not only helps us to improve on our weaknesses, but it can also help us to develop our strengths. By taking time to focus on nurturing and using our strengths more, we go from being good at something to being excellent at it. We can reach our potential and achieve great growth by developing the skills we are already good at.

3 – IT BOOSTS OUR CONFIDENCE

Making the decision to improve on our skills takes us a step closer to feeling more confident. Once we have achieved a certain goal, gained another skill, or developed a certain area of our life, we naturally feel good about ourself. The more we keep on developing in the areas of our life we are not confident in, the more we can boost your confidence.

4 – IT IMPROVES OUR SELF-AWARENESS

Personal development is closely linked to self-awareness. It gives us the opportunity to take an honest look at the areas of our life that need improvement. Through this process, we get to know ourself, what our true values are, and where we would like to go in life. Once we go through this process, we will improve our self-awareness and experience fulfilment.
