For Muslims, tolerating other religions is a religious moral duty as Allah says in the Quran,

On the other hand, UNESCO also voiced out their principles on tolerance,

" Tolerance does not mean toleration of social injustice or abandonment or weakening of one's convictions. One is free to adhere to one's own convictions and we have to accept that human beings are naturally diverse."

Based on the principles above, it is concluded that tolerance comes from the recognition of:

the dignity of human beings

the basic quality of human beings

universal human rights

fundamental freedom of thought, conscience and belief

BUT!
In Islam, tolerating does not mean;

we believe all religions are the same

we do not believe in the supremacy of Islam

it is clearly stated in the holy Qur'an about the religious freedom. There is no compulsion in the matters of religious .

''There should be no compulsion in religion.Surely the right way has become distinct from error'' . ( 2: 256 )

''For you is your religion ,and for me is my religion n.'' (109:6 )

Examples from the Prophet :

When prophet Muhammad s.a.w migrated to Medina, his role as a mere religious leader ended. He became the new political leader of a state, governed by the precepts of Islam. The prophet must ensure the peaceful coexistence of Muslims, Jews, Christians, and Polytheist . Due to this, the prophet laid down a 'constitution' which detailed the responsibilities of all parties which resided in Medina, their obligations toward each other, and certain restrictions which were placed on each of them. Prophet Muhammad did not force them to convert to Islam . As a result, the prophet succeed to gather these different tribes under one system of government .

Prophet Muhammad s.a.w also sent letters to all the rulers around Saudi Arabia to convey the message of Islam. However, he did not threaten them to accept Islam .

There was one time when the prophet was preaching in the mosque and suddenly, a Badouin man came in and urinated in the mosque. The prophet did not forbid him and told the sahabah to not scold him. Instead, after the man finished , the prophet told one of the sahabah to just bring a bucket of water and wash the affected area.

After war, the enemy soldiers were captivated. They are allowed to be free under one condition. Either they convert to Islam, or they teach the Muslims' children on how to read and write.
