This is my 17th year teaching. I started out in LAUSD (3 years), then moved to the Bay Area and taught in San Jose USD (11 years), and came home to La Verne to start working in PUSD (3 years). Now I will finally join half my family members as a ULV student. :-) 

I did not study education in college, graduating with a BA in Spanish and a BS in Horticulture. I actually entered teaching through Teach For America and have worked as a classroom teacher in SEI and bilingual (Spanish/English) classrooms (mostly 2nd and 3rd grades), as well as assisting with SJUSD's Migrant Ed program (pre-K and K). I've also been a consulting teacher, working with new teachers in San Jose, and now as a Literacy Coach here in Pomona. I feel strongly about helping teachers (especially new teachers) be as effective as possible in meeting the needs of ALL their students - especially those facing challenges such as learning a second language and/or low SES.

I earned my bachelor's degree in Deaf Education from the College of New Jersey. I taught in schools for the deaf in NY and New Jersey and while in New York, I started taking teacher's courses to learn more about language. While I had my three kids, I continued my education at Columbia taking courses I enjoyed and completed my masters with a degree in learning disabilities/neurologically impaired. I also received permanent certification as a learning disabilities teaching consultant and pre-school through elementary certification. When I went back to teaching I was an evaluator at first and then decided to go into the classroom to work with children with learning disabilities. The first child that could not read I realized I did not know how to teach him. This began my journey toward structured literacy.
