My vision includes establishing resilience, grit, promoting a safe environment, encouraging students to self advocate, character building and to foster community advocacy skills for students.

I believe students have the ability to achieve when they are fully engaged and interested in the topic. This includes schoolwork and intervention programs. I believe any student can achieve and are not limited by what others believe they are. I believe there is more to a person than cognitive intelligence. There is also an emotional intelligence and a social intelligence that can be expressed in many different ways. Guiding students to tap into what works for them and make it work for them can be a major impact on their lives and much more.

The role of a counselor as an advocate for students requires a counselor to have effective communication skills and established trust with students, parents and school administration. The goal of advocacy takes teamwork with all parties involved and to persist in order to get a desirable outcome.

I intend to work with students in a high school setting. I want to incorporate different group topics to meet the needs of the students at that particular school. This may include leadership groups, meditation groups, mediation groups, multicultural groups and conflict resolution groups. I also intend to place students who can benefit from the group and mix with students who can provide input due to personal experience. Everyone can learn from one another.

Implicit Bias Reflection

My experience while taking the tests was interesting. I intentionally answered the prompts to the best of my abilities. I consciously made sure that I was honest and did not answer to skew the outcome. At times, I asked myself how the prompts would determine my bias and how connections were being made. I was not surprised by my results because I was already aware of my biases due to experiences and understanding that I have been exposed to stereotypes projected by the media and the news. The only significance from my experience was that I am made more aware of how my biases would affect me as a school counselor. The tests also gave me an idea of how I may treat others in a professional setting and how to fix that.
