We calculated the amount of rainfall that can be captured from the roof of the building to be 12,135 gallons. This would fill a 55 gallon rain barrel 220 times in a year. More than enough water for 25 hemlock trees which need 485 gallons per tree or 1.33 gallons per day. NEXT we shall install a rain barrel or cistern and irrigation tape.

We have identified at our field site the environmental problems with the land. Part of the landscaping plan we want to implement is putting in a retaining wall on the steep graded bank, where the soil erosion is present. The retaining wall would be approximately 10 feet tall and 200 feet long. We would like to plant Japanese maples 10 feet apart with some type of shrubbery in between the maples. The root systems of both the shrubs and maples would help hold the bank and would help prevent any further erosion of the bank, along with the retaining wall. The Japanese maples would be a good choice, because they don’t require allot of maintenance and and when fully grown are very appealing to the eye. Also for our plan, we would need to create a budget plan for the project. So, we would need to know the pricing of mulch, Japanese maples, shrubs, and the landscaping timber. The Japanese maples range anywhere from $50 to $100, and a 6in x 6in x 8ft landscaping timber costs approximately $20 a piece.

We attempted to find custodians promptly afterwards, but had no luck. We aim to try again Monday and we will make a table to give them and politely ask if they could record their shift and when the lights are on in the halls and when active hours of people being present in them are and when they are not. Those that live on campus plan to go in there late at night a few times to see when they are on in hallways. We will also put up signs showing where the light switches are in the building that say to make sure you turn off lights when they are not being used.
