Background: U.S. prisoners of war in Japan underwent efforts to make them “invisible.” Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken hero, Louis Zamperini, like so many other POWs, was imprisoned, beaten, and denied basic human rights in POW camps throughout Japan. Additionally, Japanese- American internees like Mine Okubo and George Takei experienced isolation as they were shut out from the rest of their home, the United States.

They felt betrayed by their country and when they were finally able to return to their home, they were not welcomed into their country.
