On the other hand, social media is a positive factor that can help with interactions and contacting people. According to a video clip called “Teens and Social Networking,” an interviewed person stated at (0:00:31 - 0:00:36), “It’s a great way to meet new people and create connections.” Also, it states in the Newsela article that, “Heavy gamers who have a network of friends on social media seem to do better than those who play the games a lot and don’t have similar social networks.” These quotations explain that social media can allow you to interact with new people. Also, some people who aren’t comfortable talking with people socially, can talk to them online. It can help them overcome their fears of being socially awkward. Furthermore, it can help some people with depression, having many friends online instead of having none in real life might help them feel more important and happy.

Secondly, on the other hand, staying on your electronics has an equal amount of disadvantages. Kids who spend excessive time online get depressed, gain weight (becoming obese), and their grades decrease. According to, “Scope: Are You a Screen Addict?”, 21% of kids spend over 16 hours a day online (pg. 11, para. 11) Kristen Lewis demonstrates that kid's’ eyes are drawn to the screens, engulfed with the device and what’s on it. Most of them can’t seem to turn them off and that enables them to do things that need to be done.

Introduction

Waking up from a good night’s sleep, the first thing he usually does in the morning is grab his phone and plug in his laptop. With constant text messages, status updates and snaps waiting to be opened, many teenagers can relate to the same thing. Later that day, his teacher passed out the recent progress report. His eyes scampered across the paper as he slowly and tragically processed his grade. Instead of studying for his math test or meeting up with his tutor, he continued to fall back in class. He pushed homework assignments out of the way for video games and the latest TV shows. An article from Scholastic states that “an average teenager spends more than 53 hours in front of a screen.” That’s nearly 8 hours every day! While others debate that the online world is a wonderful tool for their children, kids of all ages had became victims of excessive screen time. The overload of screen time has taken a negative effect on many kids’ lives, including lowering their self esteem, hurting their social/physical lives, and exposing them to predators.

To summarize, the question of whether social media is good for teens is still very debatable. After reviewing multiple credible sources I believe social media is harmful to teens. For this reason, it is harmful because social media affects yourself, friends, family and your school. It takes over your life and doesn’t let you concentrate on school. It will lead to depression and issues that left you worrying. My analysis of this issue has left me with little doubt that teens who are always on social media do worse than those who are on social media very little of the time.

To begin with, spending too much time online does have some of its advantages. It improves people’s multitasking skills, allowing them to work on different tasks at the same time. Based on the article, “Scope: Are You a Screen Addict?”, the author clarifies that people gain better vision and build their reflexes by playing video games (pg. 11, para. 10). She points out that video games require an extra amount of ability to pass/complete a level, or win the game. People’s bodies learn to adjust quickly to different games and end up increasing their skill levels and improving themselves.
