WHY ARE THE AUDIENCE SO IMPORTANT?

To be able to understand the importance and benefits of audience feedback, it is important to understand the value of the audience. The consumers of my products have great power and influence over the creation and direction of where the products go. It is vital that my products appeal and connect to the audience as they have the power to decide the products success, and in the real industry this would determine financial success. The purpose of creating these media products starts and ends with the audience, and this dependant relationship between the audience and creativity was sustained throughout this project to ensure my end products were relevant and engaging with my audience.

Realising the importance of the audience, it is ideal to maintain a constant dialogue through each products construction. The feedback from my audience will give insight into the response of the products and will identify strengths and weaknesses. It can also inspire or challenge the products creator as new ideas are suggested and changes that could be made. These comments can give confidence to the creator or can force them to question their work, both traits which are important for the development of the products. These outside viewpoints offer honest reviews separated from the creating vision, allowing more freedom for detail to be noticed.

Working in a group throughout my A2 coursework project I had to work in sync with my group over creative decisions. However this meant I had group members to challenge my opinions or offer new ones. Audience feedback is my way of proving what my target audiences perspective is, and I believe the presentation of a rough cut was the easiest way to modify anything. I believe audience feedback was most important here.

RESPONSE TO MUSIC VIDEO ROUGH CUT: FIRST FEEDBACK

From the comments we have received as a group I have worked out some simple improvements that need to be made to our music video. A lot of the feedback was to do with lip syncing and colour. We are going to ratify these problems. We will spend more time and effort into ensuring the lip syncing is exactly in line with the music. Some comments said "tiny bit out..." and "Out of time on some of shots". Also we will ensure that the colour remains the same throughout the video. We had noticed this issue and are planning to change it as the colour on some shoots are brighter/darker than other shoots. As many of our audience made comments on removing shot(s) we have listened to these and removed a leaf shot from our video ("The leaf shots are...questionable") as the audience did not like this shot. The second and third photo of feedback was the most useful to us. It gave us clear instructions of what was wrong and we could work with the feedback they gave us.

WHAT I LEARNT FROM THE MUSIC VIDEO ROUGH CUT: FIRST FEEDBACK

Having stated that audience feedback was most useful here, I believe the influence of my audience was also most apparent here as until now the video was constructed purely on my groups creative vision. Therefore, the presentation of my rough cut allowed opportunity for this vision to be challenged. Feedback from Beth “Quicker edits – shots are too long" made me analyse the length of shots and edit there play time when editing. I realised that this contrast between narrative and performance was something my audience invested in most. Shown by feedback saying, “make sure cuts are on beat" we made adjustments to appeal to my audience more, by putting more attention and prevalence on cutting the shots to help the narrative sequence and the performance flow easier. From my rough cut feedback, we decided to cut all leaf and dripping paint shots. To my audience this caused the comment to have more significance, and strengthened the professionality and give the video more clarity. Lastly, with a comment “tiny bit out but great acting" I learnt that another key feature of lip syncing was not yet focused enough. This caused me to evaluate which clips were lip synced and make the decision of cutting certain clips for the benefit of making my video more consistent and clear. As I progressed with the edit, I learnt that lip syncing was one of the hardest things for us to achieve with good success as it takes great precision and time, meaning I referred to audience feedback throughout on this matter to strengthen this weakness.

The response to my rough cut was largely very positive and encouraging, and all was beneficial to my product. Importantly, this gave us as the creators confidence in my work and motivated me to continue, things which are important in such a lengthy process.

However, some more critical comments can be argued. While most did enhance my video, such as the query of “creating a slicker flow between each shot" which subsequently made me realise the block editing, making us add transitions and fades to black at the end, other comments went against the genre conventions I had analysed. For example the comment “lighting and colour corrections“. From my research on the indie pop genre, atmosphere and aesthetic are vital elements in portraying brand image. With the genre favouring the more realistic or dull image, it was important that I used low key lighting throughout to show the authentic nature of the genre. This is strengthened by my use of coloured lighting. Therefore, this dullness was done purposefully in line with genre convention.

The addition of this is vital, while it doesn't allow me to respond or make changes, it allows me to get an insight into the reception of the video and enables me to understand whether I have been successful in my aims for this product. From listening to the final feedback I have now understood from my audiences point of view that the video was a success and that they enjoyed and liked the video.

The first opportunity for audience feedback on the two ancillary products came when presenting our first physical draft. Pictured below, both products were unfinished and more about showing early ideas, however the responses retained still had influence on the final products. For example, feedback “Front cover is amazing" gave me confidence in my ability to make this a really good product. I used a very varied range of photos for my digipak which in the first look of things my audience didn’t like the eye or colour ratio. “Don’t like the eye as a disk”. My colour scheme was viewed as random and I agreed with the feedback as it didn’t help with the link between the products. With my magazine advert feedback was generally positive, “Colour is good love the picture fits well with the digipak colours”. My audience did pick up on areas mostly that I knew I had to add already which made it more positive on my behalf for example “Must add in date of release and album name”. I totally understood and agreed with both criticisms. I decided to experiment more with imagery for the disc design and removed the eye completely as well as taking out some photos and changing them, as it was obvious that this could disinterest my audience into not thinking this product was for them, when it is meant to engage them.

Pictured left is the audience feedback I received following the presentation of the first draft of my two ancillary products. It was clear that colour scheme and some of the imagery consistently appeared as favourite features. With comments such as “Colour is good" I felt confident in the promotional value of both products. However some mistakes were thankfully noticed through this audience feedback, proving how valuable and necessary it is to the creative process. The comment “Colour ratio not right" helped improve the professionalism of my magazine advert and help it link with the other products, These mistakes could be easily fixed, and as shown below they did make my products look more aesthetically balanced.

To conclude, I feel that without audience feedback or audience research, our creativity would of had restrictions and I am confident that the success of our products would have been limited. These honest encouragements and assessments have turned my weaknesses into strengths and developed my products through adjusting mistakes and adding new visions. Audience feedback has been a great source of support in acting as a second voice of opinion, and has helped direct our coursework. If I had the chance to gather audience feedback again for a creative task I would only use it more often, and use various social media tools to accomplish this. However upon reflection, I feel I used audience feedback to a good extent and its impact upon my work is visible.
