In my solo I used;
- To droop
- To flow
- To roll
I chose these verbs because I channelled the grief I was feeling and played around with which ones felt linked to my emotions. This helped me to put my emotions into movement. For example, I linked droop to the lack of energy and how drained the grief made me feel, the movement therefore was slow and sloppy.

My theme was focusing on the effects of grief and how individuals deal with it. I was inspired by this theme as I had recently lost a loved one, so the subject was close to my heart and I was experiencing myself the effects of it. This theme was also linked closely to suicide and how people who have been left behind grieve. I also wanted highlight reaching out to our loved ones and making sure everyone is doing well. It's about showing people they have that support network around them. This theme was a hard theme for me to do as it was a raw subject and I had to make sure that I wasn't getting to deep into the research process as it could of effected me even more. The theme of grief is something that everyone unfortunately experience and therefore people deal with differently.

Due to my situation involving suicide, I chose this song as I believed the title and the theme behind the song linked. The theme behind the song is, "Leaving the light on", I interpreted this to mean that they will always be there for their loved ones. However, after performing to it a few times it made me think to an audience it could be misinterpreted, meaning I was the one struggling. Therefore, I chose the instrumental in the hope it would show that I was the one grieving and I am encouraging people to reach out.
This piece of music builds up and is repetitive; this made me think of the constant emotions a grieving person feels and how emotions build up throughout peoples life and are expressed at different points.

In the UK thousands of people end their lives by suicide each year. Figures show that men are three-quarters of that percentage. There are many reasons why an individual would want to take their life for example;
- Society
- Community
- Relationships
- Individual
Losing a loved one is never easy but it becomes increasingly harder when the cause of death is suicide. There are many coping mechanisms of suicide on the people that are left behind;
- The need for a reason
- Stigma, Shame and isolation
- Trauma
- A ripple effect on their own mental health
- Mixed emotions
Suicide leaves behind many unanswered questions and often people want to find someone or something to blame so they can help themselves to understand. Whilst any loss is upsetting many people find the shock of suicide the hardest part to overcome. The NHS describe the loss of suicide as grief but with the volume turned up. This meaning the loss feels intensified. It is also said that anger is a big emotion in the bereaved process as the uncertainty plays on the person.
Many families are often counselling after situations like this happen.

I have recently watched a case study which helped me to understand move about the importance of checking up on your friends and family and the scary truth of a person feeling suicidal. My case study focused on Kevin Hines and his short movie the Ripple effect.

I started off by creating a small motif and then used things off this list to help my add layers to it that linked and highlighted my theme.
I used repetition to show the constantly feeling of grief and how when something like this first happens it feels like the feeling will never go away. I also used retrograde, this means to repeat the motif but in reverse order, I used this to try and show that things might get better but after a while your grief can take over again.
These were the main two I used to represent my theme but I also used, levels, tempo and force.

During rehearsals, to help me choreograph, I improvised to the piece of music I had chosen and picked on certain moves I liked. I then put the moves together to make a section of the dance. At first I struggled to improvise as I was constantly doing the same movements that are in my movement vocabulary so I tried closing my eyes which helped me to relax and loosen up. However, with me finding this process harder it took me longer to create choreography. This was the section I created with improvisation as my choreographic technique. I have now created a chorus and bridge and in my next rehearsals I need to add them together and fill in the gaps.

Previously, I have created a bridge and a chorus and now need to fill the gaps around it. For this rehearsal I used Richard Serra's verb list to help me choreograph. I enjoyed this technique the most as I felt it was the best way to express my emotions. I first experimented with a couple and the original verbs I chose were; to droop, to roll, to flow, to curve and to scatter. These all felt right on my body when thinking about my theme. With my emotions being raw I struggled to really let do during this process. This was the short motif I choreographed for droop. This became the beginning section for my piece. I believed this to represent the lack of energy and motivation a person feels during grief.
