California’s history is important because it changed the land and the people living there. The Gold Rush brought thousands of people looking for a better life, turning small towns into big cities. Railroads, farms, and businesses grew, making California a place full of jobs and opportunities. Then later, it became a center for new technology, where companies like Apple and Google started. Without the Gold Rush and the other things. California wouldn’t be as famous or powerful as it is today.

California’s colonization started in the 1700s when Spain took control of the land and made it part of New Spain. Spanish priests, like Father Junípero Serra, built missions churches and villages to teach Native Americans about Christianity and to control the area. Spain also built forts (called presidios) for soldiers and towns (called pueblos) for settlers.

In 1821, Mexico won its freedom from Spain, and California became part of Mexico. The missions were closed, and the land was given to rich Mexican families who built large ranches (called ranchos). More people moved to California, but Native Americans suffered from sickness and unfair treatment.

In 1846, American settlers started the Bear Flag Revolt to fight against Mexican rule. Soon after, the United States took control of California.
