In academic writing, a thesis is the main idea or claim that a writer supports in an essay or research paper. It's presented in the introduction, outlining the writer's stance on a topic and guiding the reader on what to expect. Essentially, the thesis acts as the backbone of the work, providing structure and coherence.

The thesis was more of a statement in high school, but now I see it as a position. It should pull the reader in and give them a reason to want to read it if it is creatively written. The thesis should not be a fact; it should be debatable. A thesis should be both specific and descriptive of the essay's trajectory in arguing the point.

-Stephanie Lamb

A thesis is the main argument or claim of an essay or research paper, encapsulating the central idea and guiding the direction of the entire piece. It consists of several main aspects: specificity (ensuring it's not too broad), early appearance within the first paragraph, and adaptability (allowing for changes as you write, revise, and edit your paper). The process of developing a thesis involves careful planning, where a strong claim is formulated, followed by drafting, where specificity and clarity are prioritized early on. Finally, in the editing stage, the thesis is refined to meet the clear expectations of the assignment, ensuring it remains specific, early, and adaptable to the evolving needs of the paper.

The thesis provides a clear concise statement of the main argument or point of the topic. It should encapsulate the primary idea, often presenting a view or argument that the author is going to substantiate and support with evidence from credible sources (or hopefully credible sources!) All subsequent paragraphs and discussions should relate back to and support the thesis statement. The thesis should be gripping and state its importance and why the reader should be interested.

Michelle Payne
