Strategies for enhancing human connection through technology and creative strategies for providing feedback.

Three ideas for the symposium:
1) Focus a session on strategies for building community in digital environments. Think of all of the ways in which we could address this topic and also hit on creativing inclusive spaces. Tie this into some fun, hands on assignment that teaches them how to use a tool such as Flipgrid or this tool, Padlet.
2) Faculty ask a lot about ways in which to provide substantive feedback--and especially when teaching larger classes. We could have a few faculty from a variety of disciplines present their ideas --and resources (peer feedback forms, rubrics, etc.).
3) How can we improve peer feedback? (I know a few HS faculty who could offer some tips). What are some of the digital tools out there that might enhance peer review and feedback?

Could we get the students involved? Perhaps they can provide short, video vignettes that help frame certain segments of the day? Maybe frame this as a video contest like they did for the Inclusion and Diversity conference?
For example, they might prepare some clips about things like: what are some of their best learning experiences in online or hybrid courses: what worked? What didn't?
What are some of the technologies students are using that we might want to know about--and try to integrate into our own teaching?
For example, if many students are using Snapchat, how could we (or should we?) try to consider ways to use it?
The student voice and perspective in all of this would be powerful.

Also, could we get ASUWB involved with helping to spearhead a short student survey ahead of the symposium about ways in which students are using technology and what specific technologies the are using? This would really help our campus better understand the needs and preferences of our students.

Mike Caulfield at WSU Vancouver is going great work on developing curricular materials for helping students to navigate a polarized digital landscape including learning how to be critical readers of claims they find on the internet and sort through disinformation. His work is relevant across disciplines and he’s close enough that we might be able to afford him ... jvg
