He sort of listen better to his parents in the story, but he had a lot of secrets from mostly everyone. He also was the one who went to see his brother get shot. He also was the one who went with his father to go traveling to get supplies when his father was taken and was never seen again.

She also was the wife of Life Meeker, didn't really have that much to do really in the story except that she only weeped when she found out that sam was going to war and when she found out that father was dead. She only drank in the story after father died until when she found out that Sam was to be shot.

He was the father to Tim Meeker and Sam Meeker. He was a husband to Savannah Meeker. He died from being put into a ship for slaves by a group of cowboys ambushing him. He then got the sickness that was on the ship and dies from it, they say that he buried him on a island. In the beginning of the story he was mad at Sam because for all he did for Sam was to get him to live a good life and be in Yale, but Sam decided that he wanted to be in the army instead and got shot.

Basically what happens in the story is that a kid name Sam who is the brother of Tim. He supposed to go to Yale just like his dad (Life Meeker) wanted but he decided that he wanted to join the army for the war that was going on. So his dad got somewhat mad at him and told him to never come back until he becomes his son again. Then he came back home after about 3 years on fighting and he hid from everyone thinking that his mother and brother didn't like him anymore for joining the army.
The second time he came back home he ended up finding out that his dad was dead because before he came back his brother and father went to go and sell things in Verplanks to get things that they needed for the tavern that they owned so they could stay in business. Anyways they went to Verplanks but on the way back a group of cowboys that they had already seen before came back and took his father without his brother seeing, then he later found out that he got put on a ship for slaves. His father then got one of the illnesses that were being carried on the ship and died from it. Then Sam got accused for cattle theft and got shot from his own troop for it even though he didn't actually try to take any cattle because they were his own cattle from his home. That is what basically happened in the story.

With all this going on, Tim has to decide which side he supports. The whole book had been leading up to the moment where Tim was going to need to choose which side he was on, the ones that wanted war, or the ones that wanted ot fight for what they wanted. Instead of taking sides, he decided to be anti-war.
