Bowl
Water
Paper Clip (or other dense small thing like a sewing pin, but be careful with anything sharp)
Soap

Fill bowl with water.
Carefully lay the paper clip flat on the water so it floats. (You might try putting the clip on a fork and slowly lowering the fork into the water.)
Once the clip is floating, add some soap to the water.
Does the clip stay floating or sink?

ANSWER
(Don't look below until you try!!)

Even though the clip is metal and denser than water, it floats at first because the water has a "skin" on it, like a balloon, called surface tension. Basically, the water loves itself so much it hugs itself tightly rather than touch other things.

The soap relaxes the water and reduces the surface tension, allowing the object to fall into the water.

Our eggs have arrived! We have 13 eggs with very different colors and sizes.

Chicken eggs take 21 days to hatch. In nature, the mother hen will sit on her eggs the entire 21 days with very few breaks for food and water. She turns each egg several times a day to ensure the chicken embryo doesn't get stuck to one side of the egg.
Since I don't want a hen in my house ;) we are using an incubator. An incubator is a machine that keeps the eggs at just the right temperature, makes sure there is the right amount of humidity for the eggs, and turns the eggs multiple times a day. Think of it as a mechanical hen. :)
After just 1 day in the incubator, the inside of the egg has begun to change (see pics below).
There are just 20 DAYS LEFT until baby chicks!

Note the small angles cut out of the bottom of the legs.

They will only "walk" down a surface that is tilted.

Try making your creatures out of different kinds of paper (copy paper, construction paper, old envelopes, newspaper, magazine pages, thin cardboard, etc.).

Try tilting the ramp steeper or shallower. Try using different surfaces (books, paper, cooking pans, cardboard, cloth, etc.)

Today I'm candling all the eggs. Candling is basically shining a bright light into the egg so you can see what's inside. This year, I bought a new candler with an ovascope! Now we don't have to find a dark room to view the eggs!

The first egg was unfertilized, like one you might get at a grocery store. You can see the air cell, the albumen (egg white), and the yolk.

I love this song! It was first introduced to me by a few students, then I sang it in the choir that I sing with. I love this version with Pink and her daughter. This is the Reprise, which means it's a repeat and not the full song. It is missing some of the verses.

Activity Works combines physical activity and core curriculum content so students exercise while they learn about Dinosaurs, Space, Endangered Species, Fractions, Nouns and Verbs, and many more. Activity Works has 1, 3, 6 and 12 minute animated episodes (with child actors, professional voice over talent and originally scored music to meet a beats-per-minute protocol) and cover all subjects, including Cultural Arts. The program even has a nutrition component called All Star Health Squad that also includes fun and engaging animated videos, teaching students about the importance of fruits and vegetables. Activity Works is used in HISD classrooms so many students are familiar with the program.

Day 16! Only 5 days (or so) left before we have baby chicks! They could start hatching anytime between Thursday and Saturday!! Here is an egg candling with an Easter Egger chick inside. At this point of development, the chick is turning it's head to be near the air cell (the bright spot at the bottom of the egg). Just before it hatches it will break the cell and start breathing air. It's internal organs are almost finished growing and its body almost fills the entire egg.

Egg 1: a Buff Orpington
Egg 2: an Olive Egger
Egg 4: an Easter Egger
Egg 8: a "Fun and Funky" surprise.
Egg 10: another "Fun and Funky" surprise.
Egg B12: Unkown type of bantam (This egg went into the incubator 1 day after the others so...choose wisely!)
