“Information literacy-understanding how to use and access information- is at the core of lifelong learning” (Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning).

"Students were not overwhelmed by too much information. Instead, they were floating in a sea of information but did not know how to access more than a few useful drops"(Pitts).
Further  indicators of the changing role:
1997- Research into the Information Literacy Movement leading to new roles and ideas for how School LMS can be leaders published. Mark von Wodtke, an architect in environmental design, published an important book to be used by budding architects and also an article in School Library Media Quarterly concerning the use of high powered information tools in the thinking process to put the mind in the driver's seat.
1998- The AASL partnered with the Association for Educational Communications and Technology in to create a text- Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning- to help guide educators on how best to navigate the ‘Wild Wild West of the Information Superhighway.’ This text created a set of nine information literacy standards designed to guide and support library media specialists’ efforts in three major areas: learning and teaching, information access, and program administration.

However, while many saw this role as vital within the field very little of the time of a librarian was spent in instructional support due to factors outside of the control of the school librarian like staffing issues and lack of time to collaborate with teachers.

With the move towards greater technology integration and information literacy required for research equired by the Common Core State Standards this issue is waning since:
School librarians are uniquely positioned to influence and implement many of the school-wide goals and initiatives to ensure that all students are college and career ready, because they work across grade levels and across the disciplines (AASL).

The LMS is a one stop shop as the skill set we have directly relates to what many might need help with in the CCSS.
As the Edutopia article states, we are like the Swiss Army Knife of the CCSS.
