El xec és un document mercantil pel qual un banc s’obliga a pagar una determinada quantitat per ordre d’un dels seus clients i amb càrrec al seu compte corrent.
Per a l’exportador
 Avantatges: 
  •  No suposa cap mena d’avantatge, ja que l’exportador no té cap garantia que l’importador mantingui el seu compromís de pagar.
 Inconvenients: 
  •  Possibles insuficiències de saldo al compte corrent de l’importador.
  •  Impossibilitat de saber si els signants del xec tenen o no poder de lliurament.
  •  Possibilitat de falsificació de signatures.
  •  Possibilitat de robatori, pèrdua, deteriorament, etc. 
Per a l’importador
 Avantatges: 
  •  Domina la gestió de pagament, ja que és l’importador qui decideix quan emet el xec.
  •  Disposa dels fons fins que el xec sigui presentat al banc pagador.
 Inconvenients: 
  •  Molt pocs, excepte en el cas d’emissió del xec en divisa. El tipus de canvi aplicat serà el del dia del càrrec al compte, i per tant generarà incertesa fins al mateix moment del càrrec.
