Margaret Sanger, born in 1879, was born to a time that didn't allow contraceptives. As she grew up, she learned that she hated the idea that women didn't have access to pregnancy preventers. She wanted to change this law and the only way to do that was to break the law. She began trying to bring information and contraceptives to women in need.

Why did Margaret Sanger get involved with women's rights?

Margaret Sanger first realized the suffering some women endure when it comes to unwanted or failed pregnancies when her mother died of tuberculosis, a potentially fatal bacterial disease that usually affects the lungs. Her mother was so exhausted and sick from giving birth to and raising eleven children along with having seven miscarriages. Sanger knew there was a way to prevent women from having too many children and living an exhausting, painful life.

What did Sanger do and what were her goals?

After her mother's death, Sanger went to nursing school and went on to see that many poor, immigrant women struggled with unwanted pregnancies. She saw that many of the women who dealt with an unplanned pregnancy ended up having cheap unsafe, unsanitary, abortions because they were denied the care they needed. After seeing these tragedies, Sanger went back to her original goal which was to bring about an effective contraceptive that would keep women from dealing with unwanted pregnancies. In 1914, she came up with the term "birth control." She not only provided women with the birth control, but also began educating women on it. She opened the first women's health clinic in 1916 and was arrested for it. However, she kept persevering and made tremendous advances throughout her life. She ended up founding what is now called Planned Parenthood which provides education and clinic visits for poor women.

I didn't know who Margaret Sanger was before, but I saw her name on the vocabulary document and was interested in who she was and what she did. So, I decided to do my project on her. I learned a lot about what her goals were and how she really wanted to make a difference because of things she had experienced when she was young. I also knew I wanted to do my project on her because of what she did with her life. I am doing a research paper in my AP Language and Composition class about Planned Parenthood right now and was intrigued when I learned that she founded Planned Parenthood. I think Sanger did great things and changed the world for women when it comes to reproductive health. However, i began reading that Margaret Sanger was so against bringing more babies into the world that she made cruel comments about families and their choices when it comes to having children.
