A surrogate war is a fight between two countries, except these two countries don't actually fight. In a surrogate war, the two that are fighting support different sides of a war that is happening between two different countries. So basically its a war where two countries use vessels to fight.

The cold war is not a traditional war because the Soviet Union and the USA never engage in hand to hand combat. Instead, the competed against each other and created challenges to see who could complete them first. So instead of shooting each other they competed.

The role the United States plays in this is the defenders of South Korea. During the war the USA agrees to help out South Korea by sending troops (The army, navy and air force) to help protect them. They also help invade North Korea back to try to unite under a capitalist government. The US did this in fear of the domino effect, that means that if South Korea were to become communist, then other countries would too.

The Soviet Union plays the role of the helpers of North Korea. They protected and supported North Korea by providing diplomatic support, strategic and tactical planning, the plan for the invasion of South Korea, logistical support, and a superior air force. They did this because they wanted more power in the world, so they tried to make as many countries turn communist as they could.

June 25, 1950 About 100,000 North Korean troops crossed the border into South Korea driving Southern Korean forces back. This marks the start of the Korean war. This is significant because it is the very start of the Korean war. It is the event that drew all the other countries in and caused it to bo an event during the cold war.

October 25, 1950 UN troops press into North Korea after destroying the bulk of the North Korean army and now approach the Yalu river. The Chinese army involves itself in the war now though and sends the UN troops further back.

March 14, 1951 Seoul changes for the fourth time when UN forces once again liberate the South Korean capital. The city has been devastated, and the population has dropped drastically. The significance of this is that South Korea’s population has been dropping drastically ever since this point in the war. The damage just increases from this point out.

July 10, 1951 Truce talks between the UN and communists begin talking, this does not end the war though and fighting continues for 2 more years.

July 27, 1953 Leaders from North Korea, China, and the UN conclude an armistice that ends hostilities. A demilitarized zone is created along the border that existed pre-war. The president of South Korea announced acceptance of the agreement but never signed the document. The significance of this event means that the war is finally over! It means that there will be peace in South Korea and North korea while they both take time to rebuild and recover.

Nobody actually won the war. The war just resulted in an armistice that brought the fighting to an end. Korean civilians suffered major casualties with about three or four million people either dead, wounded or missing. The war was disastrous and destroyed most of Korea's industry. The war also caused North Korea to fall into poverty and not be able to catch up to the South. So nobody won the war, borders stayed the same, and everybody was suffering.

Post 8 - How was this a larger part of the cold war?

The Korean war was actually just a proxy war for the greater cold war. The Korean war overall fueled the hatred of the Soviet Union and America against each other even more. It built even more tension as no one won, and both countries wanted more power. North Korea invading South Korea made the US nervous as they wanted to stop the domino effect and they barely did with South Korea. It also made the Soviets worried as well as they didn’t want the US to gain any more power. They both also thought that this war was a direct attack on each other. The fight was deliberately part of the cold war too as it was communist vs capitalist.
