The story takes place in Harrison school district, in New Hampshire. The main character is Philip Malloy. His two parents are Mr. and Mrs. Malloy. Miss Narwin is Philip's English teacher, the antagonist. Coach Jamison would have been Philip's track coach. He also provided good advice. Alison Dorsette is Philip's love interest. Mr. Lunser is Philip's homeroom teacher in the beginning.

The climax starts with the news paper article. At school, Phillip Malloy is being put down by the other students because they know the truth. However most adult who read the newspaper article are standing up for Phillip and supporting him. Miss. Narwin is upset about the article and isn't sure what to do. Phillip feels like he made the wrong choice, even though many people are supporting him. We know this is the climax because after this there was a big change of events.

The main conflict in the story is Phillips inability to be on the track team. Phillip can not participate, because he has a failing grade in Ms. Narwin's class. If he did not have a failing grade, the suspension of Phillip would not have occurred. This failing grade, lead to Phillip antagonizing Ms. Narwin to get back at her.

The resolution is that Philip got to go to a new school. Ms. Narwin, on the other hand, got to go to Florida to think about resigning and to spend time with her sister. We don't believe that Phil liked the resolution because he never got to get on the track team and he cried when asked to lead the national anthem at his new school because he "didn't know the words." Overall, the resolution wasn't exactly what Phillip wanted.

"Honesty is always the best policy"
Philip was not really telling the whole story. It started when he told his dad he didn't want to do track, even though the real reason was because of his failing grade. As this progressed, his lying was taken to another level. While he was in the principal's office, he said he was singing. In reality, he was actually humming. Another example of Phillips dishonesty is during the news paper interview. He exaggerated the story to the point where it looked like Ms.Narwin was the bad person. His story made her seem guilty, and he was innocent. Overall, honesty is always the best policy.

"You Can't Always Get What You Want." In the story, this is a theme that is mostly shown in the end. Philip thought that in trying to get Ms. Narwin fired, he would only have a bright future, but he didn't get what he wanted. He didn't realize that you can't always get what you want. If he always got what he wanted, there wouldn't be a book in the first place. This is a prime example of karma. ~ Grayden, and Alex
