To what extent is this an “inherently” political issue vs. one that is “politicized” (made political) by our society? Does it matter? Where do we see this issue take place in our lives?

Immigration can be considered inherently political because it naturally elicits controversy regarding how it will impact local communities, native citizens, and their jobs, as well as the general economy of the country. This subsequently creates a divide on how people think we should handle the subject. Immigration is relevant because it basically regulates where people have the discretion to live in the world. On the community level, a large portion of Sunset's own populace is quite diverse implying immigration. Locally, Portland's job opportunities may be impacted by immigration, and furthermore, on the national scale immigration has affected the US's economy greatly. Globally, immigration has created many cultural implications around the world.

Education is not an inherently political subject, however, to a certain extent it has been politicized, especially regarding what and how information is taught to students. An example would be information taught about LGBTQ+, or other adjacent topics. Education is important because it impacts the youth and consequently future generations of society. It affects the ideologies and thought processes of people regarding political and humanitarian issues. Sunset is a school, so of course what is allowed to be taught and how information is controlled does impact the sunset student body. Locally, education influences the political opinions of local citizens. Nationally, education can similarly impact ideas and partially impact political worldview. Finally, globally, differing education may cause strife between international powers and their people.

To some extent gun violence can be politicized as political leaders use it to gain power over supporters. Gun violence is a large issue as we see it take many forms in our lives, one of those being school shootings, which instills fear within students all over America. We have been affected by this at sunset during lock downs, as we don't know if someone is going to end our lives or not. Within portland we have seen gun violence based off of race, or sexuality. Nationally we can see all over the states of America deaths that have occured due to gun violence, on an international level, we can see that gun violence is an inherently American problem. This being an American problem makes it controversial in our society.

Some countries nationalize their healthcare system with strict regulations, while some such as the U.S privatize medicare with independent insurance companies to cover costs, mainly de-regulated. We see income inequality everywhere. In Sunset we see examples of income inequality with how certain students required reduced prices for lunches. Locally in Beaverton/Portland, we see many taking trimet because they aren't able to afford gas prices or their own car. Nationally we see a large disparity in income between genders. The minimum wage in certain states is also disproportionately low. Finally, globally, there are a plethora of third-world countries in which extreme poverty runs rampant, for example, the garment industry present in Southern Asian countries.

At one point it was inherently political but because of the separation of church and state, it is no longer inherently political but now politicized. In 1833 religion was disestablished from the government and shouldn't be used to make legal and political decisions. Because of it being once connected to the government in America at least, it still is a common piece of "information" people used to base their decisions on. It does matter because people use religion that not everyone believes to make decisions over what people should do. Since Oregon is a pretty unreligious state compared to other states, it might be more untouched by decisions guided by religion. At a national level religion was once connected to the government and religion is used in other countries.
