The first resource not only provides tips, but also includes resources that could be helpful to use when teaching general education peers. It also provides some tips for families about how they can support their child while at home. The second resource gives sort of a step by step procedure on how teachers can help their students to understand their peers with different abilities, and how they can communicate with them. I like how both of these resources help the teacher to create a safe place for students to ask any and all questions that they might have about their peers with various abilities.

1. I think some of the first steps for schools to start viewing students with disabilities from a strength based approach is to empower the student to advocate for themselves and teach them to articulate their strengths and weaknesses. The I'm Determined website is a great tool for advocation. The one-pager is a tool that students can use to write or orally say their strengths and weaknesses to the teachers they may have. https://www.imdetermined.org/one-pager-template/
2. Next year I am teaching in a school that has a principal that is wanting to make her middle school an all inclusive school. I think a big challenge will be to get all the teachers in the school on board. They may not have a great understanding of inclusion. There is an assessment on the Inclusive School Network's that teachers in schools can take and it will tell you how your school is doing inclusive practices. https://inclusiveschools.org/inclusion-resources/self-assessment/

I loved Andrea's presentations today- I really enjoy thinking about what defines me as a professional, what areas I have strengths in and what areas I need more support in. With so many special education teachers leaving the field so early in their careers, is it harder to expect that teachers will become "advanced" or "experts" ? How can we keep more teachers around longer so that they can feel the success of becoming more proficient? How do we support new teachers?
This is a resource from NEA about how to mentor new teachers.
