Truthfully, i normally look at all domains but in the following order.

Curriculum

Teachers

The EF I normally look at are the personality of the student, the student's home environment, how the student interacts with different teachers and the feedback from my different colleagues, how the student is responding to different subjects and the peers he interacts with

As a teacher, I always look at the student domain first and then the environment, before I start to plan the interventions needed for my pupil. It is very important for me to understand the child's needs first before I plan further.

As I often only see the class once a week due to my subject's timetabling, I may miss out observing some of the student's behaviour. Also, some students may exhibit different behaviour in different subjects. Hence, I will need to work together with my colleagues to gather observations and feedback regarding the student.

All 5 domains are looked into, the priority of each domain will depend on the nature of the issue - is it learning of the pupils? Is it an anger management control impulse issue? Different issues will naturally focus more on some domains than others.

As I maybe focusing on my pupils' learning needs and on the teaching and learning strategies I can adopt to help the pupil, I often overlook the peers domain. I must bear in mind that social interactions and peer support is very important to encourage the growth of the pupil.

SENOs look at each case holistically, as a whole. This helps us to better understand the child’s profile and factors that contribute to the child’s learning and behavioural needs. Each input from different subject teachers help us dissect the case.

This allows SENOs to provide targeted intervention and support required.

Beginnning of the year , we will examine the pupils's profiles in the school cockpit to familiarize ourselves with the pupils we are going to teach.

Doing a termly reviews on the pupils' profiles will help me to understand the pupils better

I usually focus on family background as it is the foundation that builds the students' beliefs and attitudes about school. More often the family context plays a crucial role in the students' behaviour and acceptance of school.

I look into the factors that contribute to the behaviour of a pupil first. I would check if it is something that bothers the pupil to behave in such a way. After which we can address the reason and see how we can help the pupil.

The environment domain is one that is often not within my control. Eg some pupils may prefer to learn in a quiet environment but the general school noise level is high due to its dynamic nature.

There are also occasions that I would like to have a hands-on experiential learning experience but it is not able to be executed due to budget and space constraints.

I tend to overlook the curriculum and resource. We usually plan lessons for the class as a whole and might find it tiring to come up with extra resources for certain pupils.

I would not say overlook but I tend to focus more on the areas of environment and teacher first. I believe in the classroom the TSR is pertinent in allowing the teacher and students to work together. Peer relationship is ventured after the first step of TSR is settled. If there is friction between the teacher and the student, then it is difficult to move one.

I will usually look at the student first, examine my own teaching instruction and then the peers. Knowing the EF will allow me to examine more factors which might affect the child's learning.

With these 5 domains in mind, when we speak about challenging students at PD, I am sure we will be able to generate more possibilities/solutions together to improve the situation & better support our students.

I would focus on the student domain as I find it the most impactful out of the other domains. Understanding the individual student’s unique needs, strengths, challenges, and preferences is the foundation of effective support and can guide my decisions in all other domains, allowing me to help the student better.

We felt that we often overlook at the influences from curriculum and learning resources for the SEN students. Sometimes the pace and difficulty levels of the learning might be too challenging for the students. And we tend to in a rush to complete the syllabus and along the way the SEN students would be affected.

This ecological framework is part of our referral process to MOE psychologist and external agencies.

As such, teachers, please don’t be cautious, feel offended or worry that you’ll be judged if we ask you lots of questions… it is part of our information gathering process to fill in the ecological framework 😊

Whenever there are breakdown or other incidents coming from the SEN students and my intervention actions were not really effective, we should take a step back and reflect with the EF. There might be some areas we overlooked that preventing us to ease the situation effectively.
